The spring season is in full swing, which means the opening of many new businesses and others announcing their plans to open in Hoboken and Jersey City. From Insta-worthy hot dogs to permanent jewelry to vintage stores, there’s something for everyone to get excited about. A new medical spa, 4Ever Young, recently opened its Hoboken location. The anti-aging spa’s menu includes hydrafacials, botox, chemical peels, and more. The chain’s other locations include Edgewater, Morristown, Livingston, Ridgewood, and Spring Lake, among other locations across the US. A Jersey City location is also in the works.

Angelo Seafood Market | 626 Washington Street

JK Therapy

Angelo Seafood Market opened up at 626 Washington Street on March 7th. The team behind the market is the same team behind Stingray Lounge, which is known for its cocktail menu and raw bar.  The storefront, once a UPS store, now has a variety of filets, whole fish, specialty seafood, mussels, clams, shrimp, crab, prepared foods, lobster rolls, a raw bar, and more.

Blue Violets | 628 Washington Street

Blue Violets, led by Lauren Chang Thompson and Max Thompson, held a surprise opening at 628 Washington Street on April 20th. As the city’s micro dispensary, the 850-square-foot space brings a personalized and welcoming atmosphere, centered around a ‘thoughtful cannabis experience.’ Blue Violets is appointment-only right now.

Furever Fresh Dog Grooming | 367 1st Street

Furever Fresh exterior

With 15 years of experience as a professional dog walker, Will Ferman took the next step and opened his own full-service dog grooming salon. Services are this pet salon include a full grooming service with ear cleaning, teeth cleaning, nail trimming, and other hygienic add-ons. Longtime local dog groomer Erica Li has also joined Furever Fresh.

Glowbar | 612 Washington Street

Glowbar, a skincare chain known for its facial treatments, has taken over the previous Deka Lash space at 612 Washington Street. Originating from the East Coast, Glowbar already has multiple locations in New York and one in Connecticut.

While Margo Market announced its closure, the team has pivoted to a new concept in the space. A pop-up called Goldie Jewelry Studio will be in the space at 1102 Washington Street until June 2024. Customers can shop from a variety of designer and permanent jewelry in addition to fine, semi-, and demi-fine jewelry.

Gotan Cafe | 770 Jackson Street

Gotan’s new Mile Square location has officially opened at 770 Jackson Street inside the 7 Seventy House apartment complex as of April 19th. It occupies the long-empty storefront near the 9th Street Light Rail Station. This marks the coffee shop’s second Hudson County location.

Hachiko Tattoo | 1 Newark Street

Hachiko Tattoo is the first tattoo shop to open in Hoboken since a 1998 tattoo parlor ban was voided last year. Hachiko Tattoo owner Mark Harada has over 30 years of inking experience. The studio, located at 1 Newark Street in Hoboken, provides custom tattoos in an intimate, one-on-one environment.

Hoboken ThriftBox | 522 Jefferson Street

Hoboken ThriftBox opened its doors at 522 Jefferson Street in January. Owned by Doris Cortes, the shop brings a thrift store experience by prioritizing affordability, sustainability, convenience, and staying current with trends. The store features affordable name-brand and vintage clothing for women, men, and children, along with items for homes, pets, and books.

Hey Yogurt is a “health-conscious” Japanese-inspired dessert shop that features a range of drinkable yogurts, Japanese-style cheesecakes, and creampuffs. Originating in Fort Lee, the Hoboken location opened in mid-March at 90 Hudson Street, conveniently close to the Hoboken terminal.

Kong Dog, the TikTok-famous Korean-style corndog spot recently made its way to Newport Centre at 30 Mall Drive in Jersey City. This year, it expanded with a new location at 502 Washington Street in Hoboken, taking over the former Zero Otto Uno space. Known for its made-to-order corndogs, which can be savory or sweet, customers start by selecting a base corndog like churro, ramen, or hot Cheetos crusted, then choose fillings such as mozzarella, beef, chicken sausage, or plant-based sausage before deep frying.  The menu also features a selection of bubble teas, iced lattes, and other beverages. The Hoboken outpost opened in early March.

Maroons Creamery | 1122 Washington Street

Maroons Creamery opened its doors on March 1st. Its menu lineup includes homemade ice cream flavors like guava cheesecake, custard apple, and raspberry doughnuts.

Nuts Factory | 408 Washington Street

In fall 2023, signage of Nuts Factory appeared in the window of the former Game Stop location. The chain store eventually opened its doors during the first weekend of February. Freshly roasted + candied nuts, gummies, and dried fruits, among other sweet + savory snacks are available for purchase.

Pho Express | 732 Washington Street

Pho Express opened its doors in the former Lemongrass Sub + Noodle space at 732 Washington Street in Hoboken in February. Customers can indulge in authentic Vietnamese culinary heritage with its diverse menu. It is open from Sunday to Thursday from 11AM to 9PM and on Friday to Saturday from 11AM to 10PM.

Mills Tavern closed its doors for good in December 2023. However, Pig + Parrot owner, Mike Citarella took a chance on the former location and opened a new bar called Psycho Mike’s Therapy Bar. The bar officially opened on March 1st, 2024 at 11AM.

Swifty Cats | 600 Adams Street

Swifty Cats is a cat grooming establishment located within the Animal Infirmary of Hoboken, led by Kristen Attanucci, a Licensed Veterinary Technician and certified cat groomer. It opened in December 2023, where Kristen focuses on grooming and the well-being of cats. Having earned her veterinary technician license in 2011, Kristen continues to use her skills and dedication to feline care. 2nd Street USA | 200 Washington Street

2nd Street USA, a well-known American/Japanese thrift clothing and lifestyle brand, is expanding to the Mile Square. The new store will be located at 200 Washington Street and will have a range of fashion, including streetwear, vintage items, and luxury accessories by Japanese designers. This marks the brand’s second location in New Jersey, following its first location on Park Street in Montclair.

Alfalfa | 92 Bloomfield Street

Hoboken-based salad spot Alfalfa will open a second location in the Mile Square. The new spot will be at 92 Bloomfield Street, the former home of Sobsey’s Produce, a local business that was owned by the family of one of Alfalfa’s founders. Alfalfa is known for its seasonal salads, wraps, and gluten-free doughnuts.

The Biscuit Babe | 918 Willow Avenue

After 17 years, D’s Soul Full Cafe at 918 Willow Avenue in Hoboken has closed its doors. Replacing it is ‘The Biscuit Babe,’ as shown by the new exterior signage. While details about the menu and opening date are not yet known, the name suggests a focus on buttery biscuits and Southern-inspired cuisine.

Body Fit Training | 770 Jackson Street

Body Fit is Training (BFT) is an instructor-led, small-group training studio that is set to open at 770 Jackson Street on the first floor of the 7 Seventy House building. No opening date has been revealed yet, but signage has been up since mid-August, and the website displays that it is coming soon.

BYRD | 800 Jackson Street

The team behind Millburn’s Common Lot restaurant announced plans to open a new venture in Hoboken. The new restaurant, BYRD, will be located at 800 Jackson Street and will open soon — breathing new life into a space that has had several restaurants in its locale over the last decade. The menu will embody a relaxed and global dining experience and feature influences from Common Lot’s menu but with new choices of burgers, steaks, and pasta dishes, including a kids’ menu and a liquor license.

Cafe Cartel | 1100 Adams Street

Cafe Cartel, a new coffee shop, is set to open at 1100 Adams Street. Specializing in “curated Colombian coffee,” the cafe will have light bites such as empanadas. The menu will feature a range of coffee options made with Medellin beans, along with treats like cookies, bakery items, and more. Originally scheduled for a November 2023 launch, Cafe Cartel has shifted its opening date to later this year.

Cafe Tati | 401 Bloomfield Street

Cafe Tati is a new project from the team behind local favorites Barbes and La Boheme. It will be an express version of Barbes, featuring coffee drinks and more. The space is expected to open soon and will be takeout-only to start.

Cafexico will be located at 515 4th Street, next door to Gotham Nails. A source close to the business confirmed to The Hoboken Girl that the shop will open later this spring and serve coffee drinks in a cafe-style setting. The renderings shared of the interior space look like a light and airy vibe with lots of natural light.

The Constantine + Malibu Diner | 257 14th Street

The new version of one of Hoboken’s longtime staples, The Malibu Diner, will reopen later this year. The classic diner will be on the ground floor of a building called The Constantine, which is located at the corner of 14th Street and Willow Avenue. The Babalis family, owners of the original Malibu Diner, worked with the developer to ensure the future of the restaurant.

Cuban Pete’s | 518 Washington Street

Cuban Pete’s, a BYOB Cuban restaurant in Montclair, New Jersey, is moving into the former Charrito’s space at 518 Washington Street, with plans to open up as early as this June.

Honey Medspa | 640 Park Avenue

Hoboken resident Kacey Cangialosi is the owner of the incoming Honey Medspa, which will be located at 640 Park Avenue in Hoboken. After several years of working in the medical aesthetics industry, Kacey is stepping out on her own. The new medspa is expected to open sometime this June.

L&B Pet Markets | 155 4th Street

With a location at 15 South Fullerton Avenue in Montclair, L&B Pet Markets is making its way to Hoboken this summer. The family-owned business was founded by Mike D’Elia and his recently retired mom. The duo has been at its Montclair location for four years. L&B Pet Markets is known for its high-quality food products that cater to pets’ specific dietary needs. L&B Pet Markets is expected to open at 55 4th Street in Hoboken.

Modcup | 211 4th Street

In just ten years, Modcup went from a hotdog cart selling curbside coffee to having its own roastery, three cafes, a coffee truck, and an online business. Now, Modcup is adding a fourth cafe to its roster, this time here in the Mile Square. Modcup is setting up shop at 211 4th Street in Hoboken, with plans to open soon, pending inspections.

Paris Baguette | 1000 Maxwell Place

After years of construction, we now know what will open up at 1000 Maxwell Place in Hoboken. Thanks to a reader tip, HG was able to confirm that popular bakery and cafe Paris Baguette will open later this year.

Skin Laundry | 56 Third Street

Skin Laundry, a laser facial chain, will be opening soon in Hoboken at 56 Third Street. A representative for Skin Laundry confirmed with The Hoboken Girl that the skincare spot plans to open its 1,500-square-foot facility in mid-May

Stretch Lab | 770 Jackson Street

Stretch Lab — not to be confused with Stretch Recovery Lounge at 223 Bloomfield Street Suite 101 — will open up to the right of BFT at 770 Jackson Street. The HG team spotted signage up earlier this month, and the website shows that it is coming soon. The spot provides one-on-one assisted stretches and has over 900 licensed locations around the world.

Terrace by Alessio’s | 1201 Madison Street

Local favorite Alessio’s is opening a new restaurant in Uptown Hoboken this spring. Terrace by Alessio’s will have indoor and outdoor seating and will be located at 1201 Madison Street near the Northwest Resiliency Park. The menu will share a similar vibe to Alessio’s — serving up brunch, pizza, and gelato — but the dinner menu will differ.

Urban Market | 1425 Washington Street

Brooklyn’s Dumbo Market is making its way to Hoboken with Urban Market and is currently in the construction phase at 1425 Washington Street. This marks the supermarket’s debut in New Jersey, taking over a space left vacant for five years. Dumbo Market is known for its selection of organic and specialty items, including fresh fish, meat, and a variety of hot food options.

Village Hoboken | 516 Washington Street

A new dispensary, owned by Orange native and 16-season NBA veteran Al Harrington, is due to open this summer in Hoboken. Village Hoboken will sell Harrington’s Viola Brands products at Village Hoboken’s upcoming 516 Washington Street location.

Businesses That Opened Recently

301 Collective | 301 1st Street

Founders Marisa Corrado and Jordan Pease are neighbors turned friends. With Marisa’s background in fashion and running her online store Nouveau + Vintage, mixed with Jordan’s love for home furnishings and his online store DISO HOME, they decided to merge their two passions to create 301 Collective. The store is described as ‘two stores in one’ as each owner brings their unique eye to the inventory.

87 Sussex | 212 Washington Street

In early 2022, the closure of John’s Pizza in downtown Jersey City at 87 Sussex Street was announced. Shortly thereafter, in early March, news surfaced that Satis Bistro, another longstanding restaurant in Jersey City located at 212 Washington Street, would be taking over the former John’s Pizzeria space. Named 87 Sussex, it officially opened its doors for business in mid-February.

 

 

The Alps | 351 Palisade Avenue

On February 8th, a new space named The Alps opened in the Jersey City Heights area, the brainchild of the teams from Pet Shop and Riverview Wine and Spirits. Located at 351 Palisade Avenue in Jersey City, the bar features a vegetarian menu and has a focus on beer, wine, and spirits.

Better Days | 143 Newark Avenue

In May 2023, 143 Social, a speakeasy located underneath Bareburger, opened in Jersey City. It serves cocktails and small bites like croquettes, meatballs, and more. The same team behind 143 Social has now since expanded its business horizons and opened a new bistro called “Better Days” in February. On the menu, customers can find modern American and comfort dishes that were curated by 143 Social team members, Arto Ozgun and Jon Lemon.

Chick’nCone, a fast-food chain eatery from Pennsylvania, has gained recognition for its take on the combination of fried chicken and waffles. With multiple locations nationwide, the Jersey City location marks the second in the Garden State, with another one in the Bergen Town Center in Paramus. This location is operated by Jersey City resident and Army National Guard veteran Jason Stuart.

Cranky Angel | 135 Erie Street

Cranky Angel is a new vintage store that made its way to Jersey City. Montana Fucci’s idea was to open this kind of store when she began selling unique vintage fashion pieces on the side and saw the demand for these items. With her continuing passion for style, the storefront sells ’90s and 2000s fashion to embrace the memorable era. The grand opening date was March 2nd.

Dental Associates | 741 Secaucus Road

A new dental practice has taken the place of an old one in a shopping plaza in Jersey City Heights. Per Patch, Dental Associates has secured a 1,260-square-foot space at Heights Plaza in Jersey City. There was another dental practice, but the space has now been leased to Dental Associates, a dental group with over 20 locations across New York City, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

Dun Huang | 172 River Street

New York City-based restaurant Dun Huang opened a new location in Jersey City this spring at 172 River Street. The chain is bringing its specialty hand-pulled noodles across the Hudson River and serving up other tasty Chinese cuisine Chinese hamburgers, salads, and more.

Elysian Wine + Spirits | 130 West Side Avenue

Abigail and Travis Young, the duo behind the Hoboken spot Elysian Cafe situated at 1001 Washington Street, have expanded their business endeavors through the drink industry. Elysian Wine + Spirits is home to craft beer and a selection of wine and spirits. The shop hopes to expand with other business opportunities like hosting events and delivery.

Golden Door Dispensary | 638 Newark Avenue

Golden Door Dispensary opened up March 15th, according to a press release from the business. The adult-use dispensary is run by Jersey City resident and Marine veteran Brett D’Alessandro.

La Milpa Taqueria | 45 Franklin Street

Jersey City residents and visitors have a new taco spot to enjoy on Taco Tuesdays and every other day of the week. La Milpa Taqueria recently opened up at 45 Franklin Street in Jersey City Heights. The chef behind the project is Jamie Ramirez, the chef and owner of nearby neighborhood favorite, The Franklin.

Park Avenue Pizza + Bagels | 3515 John F. Kennedy Boulevard

As another bagel shop addition to Jersey City, this newcomer operates around the clock and brings New York-style pizza and bagels. Park Avenue Pizza and Bagels has a menu featuring different bagel choices from plain to cinnamon raisin, as well as toppings like several cream cheeses, breakfast sandwiches, cold cuts, and classic and Sicilian pies. Mediterranean food like halal meats and gyros is also included in the menu lineup.

Rise N Griddle | 576 West Side Avenue

In the former New York Bagel + Bake space, Rise N Griddle calls 576 West Side Avenue in Jersey City its new home. It is a new breakfast/lunch spot. Notable menu items include egg sandwiches, omelets, waffles, bagels, coffee, and lunch sandwiches.

Sirena | 581 Jersey Avenue

California-based boutique Sirena brought its West Coast vibe to Jersey City upon its March opening. Owner Leah Washuta has roots in Union County and felt that Jersey City would be a great fit for an East Coast location of her store. Sirena is a boutique with a stock full of clothes from the Southern California area for women of all ages.

Hamilton Park is gearing up for an addition as Hoboken’s beloved spot, The Hive, is set to open a Jersey City branch this spring. Currently located at 1000 Park Avenue in Hoboken, The Hive has different kinds of coffee creations, cinnamon rolls, and a play area for kids.

The Medicine Woman | 660-684 Tonnelle Avenue

The discussion surrounding cannabis dispensaries in New Jersey has been at the forefront since the legalization of marijuana in 2022. Therefore, many entrepreneurs are looking to get their start in the cannabis industry. This includes celebrities like Ice-T, who is teaming up with Charis Burrett, co-owner of The Medicine Woman, to establish a cannabis dispensary in Hudson County. With approval from the Jersey City cannabis control board, the duo hopes to open its outpost this spring or summer.

The Roxy | 68 Monitor Street

The team from Corto will launch a new project called The Roxy at 68 Monitor Street, a warehouse that is being renovated into a mixed-use building called The Starling. There will be a full bar in the space, which is a big change from Corto’s BYOB model. Few details are available about The Roxy but with the Corto team at the wheel, it is sure to be great.

Van Leeuwen Ice Cream Shop, an ice cream chain, is set to open its doors at 347 Grove Street this spring, taking over the former space of Borinquen Laundromat. The chain is praised for its creamy choices such as peanut butter brownie honeycomb and berry buttermilk cornbread, as well as vegan options like cookies and cream caramel swirl and vegan strawberry shortcake, Van Leeuwen is expanding its presence in New Jersey. This marks the second location for the ice cream chain in the state, following its first outpost at the American Dream Mall in Rutherford.
