About Dun Huang

Dun Huang quietly opened its doors in March 2024. The NY-based chain is a favorite among diners for its hand-pulled noodles and comforting Northwestern Chinese food. Dun Huang is a Chinese city with important ties to the Silk Road trade Route. Per UNESCO, Dun Huang was where two trade routes met, and one of the earliest locations to connect Eastern and Western traders.

The menu at Dun Huang pays homage to the city’s deep cultural roots and includes a rich array of northwestern Chinese dishes. All of the noodles are hand-pulled in the restaurant, served both hot and cold. Just a few of the dishes on the menu include Lanzhou Beef Noodles, Dunhuang Cold Noodles, Pan Fried Noodles, and ZhaJiang Noodles. Diners are also given the option of how wide they would like their noodles to be: from ultra-thin to wide and chewy.

Guests can also enjoy a Chinese Hamburger, which is different from a typical American burger. It’s made up of a meat filling, either pork, beef, or lamb, and served in a bun.

Plus, a variety of salads are available, including Cucumber Salad, Shredded Potato Salad, and Eggplant Salad. The restaurant is open while staff continues to undergo training, but the entire menu isn’t available yet.

The Newport Location

This local chain has roots in Flushing, NY. The Jersey City location is the first Garden State outpost, with other locations in Manhattan, Queens, and Brooklyn. The first location opened in 2015 in Flushing, according to an article about the restaurant opening from Jersey Digs. The other restaurants are spread out among Manhattan, Queens, and Brooklyn.

The owner of the Jersey City location, Alex, says that the team selected the Newport location because of the diverse Asian community in the area. In 2023, the personal finance website WalletHub posted findings from a study that named Jersey City one of the most diverse cities in the country. It was listed as number seven on the list, with a diversity score of 72.02. In 2021, Jersey City was named the most diverse city in the country. HG broke down the report when it first came out and how it compared to the other 500 cities in the study.

Dun Huang is among a handful of other Asian restaurants in the area. Its neighbors include Chef Tan, a Chinese restaurant, and Menya Sandaime, a Japanese Ramen spot. It’s located right off of the Newport Beach area, only about a 12-minute walk from the Newport PATH station. It’s called the only “urban beach” on the Hudson River, complete with sand, chairs, and umbrellas. No, there’s no swimming access to the water, which may be for the better, but it is still a great space for family and friends to enjoy noodles outside.

Patrons can visit the Dun Huang restaurant in Jersey City Monday through Friday at 172 River Drive, open from 11AM to 9:30PM. The restaurant is still planning a grand opening, and HG will share more details as they become available.
