Jersey City residents and visitors will have a new taco spot to enjoy on Taco Tuesdays and every other day of the week. La Milpa Taqueria will open at 45 Franklin Street in the Heights later this year. The chef behind the project is Jamie Ramirez, the chef and owner of nearby neighborhood favorite The Franklin. Read on for what we know about La Milpa Taqueria, coming soon to Jersey City Heights.

What We Know

La Milpa Taqueria is a new project from Chef Jamie Ramirez, the head chef and owner of BYOB spot The Franklin, located at 159 New York Avenue. La Milpa is located at 45 Franklin Street, just around the corner from The Franklin. Chef Jamie opened a second location of The Franklin in Secaucus in 2022. While the menu at The Franklin is mainly Italian, La Milpa will exclusively serve tacos, tortas, flautas, and quesadillas.

Plans for La Milpa were made known in May 2023, and recently, the restaurant hosted a soft opening to share the menu with friends and fans. The Hoboken Girl has reached out to the restaurant owners to learn more about an exact opening date and will update this piece when we hear back.

Tacos come in a wide variety at La Milpa. Guests have the option of getting steak, chicken, chorizo, fish, and more. Of course, there are vegetarian options for those looking for a meatless option. Also available are flautas and tortas, each with a choice of chicken, steak, or cheese filling. Other dishes are available to share, such as nachos and Elotes Callejeros, a type of Mexican street corn. There are also aqua frescas on the menu, which will be just the thing to quench one’s thirst on a hot summer afternoon.

A sign on the exterior has the restaurant’s hours as Monday through Sunday from 11AM to midnight — perfect for people trying to get their late-night taco fix. Guests can enjoy their meals inside the bright and colorful restaurant, or hang outside in the backyard at one of the many picnic tables when the weather is cooperating.

La Milpa joins many other restaurants in Jersey City that call the Franklin Street neighborhood home. Its sister restaurant, The Franklin, is only a block away. It’s an Italian restaurant known for its tasty brunch and expansive dinner menu. The Spanish restaurant, Ricky’s, is right across the street at 48 Franklin Street, serving chicken, steak, rice, beans, and empanadas. It makes La Milpa the only place to get tacos on Franklin Street.
