In Hoboken, “The Beautiful Game” is continuing to headline the summer, especially for the youth. The Hoboken Public School District is hosting “Open Field Redwings Soccer Nights” for the next four Fridays, starting Friday, July 24th and concluding on Friday, August 14th. These nights will be hosted at the Louis M. Taglieri, Jr. Stadium at 1000 Jefferson Street, the home of the Hoboken Redwings, Hoboken High School’s sports teams. The Details
All Hoboken students, not just the ones from Hoboken public schools, are welcome to attend the pick-up soccer matches, grades Kindergarten through 12th. The games will be classic pick-up games with no referees or coaches. The full night runs from 6PM to 9PM, but the night is broken up into different time slots for the diverse age groups. From 6PM to 7PM the field will be split in half, one side hosting the kindergarten through second graders and the other side hosting the third through fifth graders. Past that hour, the full field will be used for matches. From 7PM to 8PM, grades six through eight will take the pitch, and from 8PM to 9PM, the high schoolers will be welcome to play.
This event adds to the summer of soccer in Hoboken and around New Jersey, thanks to the World Cup. There have been block-long watch parties and soccer lessons for all ages and city-hosted pier screenings of World Cup games and youth instruction led by the New York Red Bulls. This summer has shown that Hoboken is following the trend, along with most of America, of bringing soccer further into the spotlight. The global influence of the sport is creeping into this country, and Hoboken shows evidence of that shift.
