The Hoboken Public Library’s historic Main Library is preparing for its next chapter. The building, located at 500 Park Avenue, will temporarily close beginning Thursday, August 13th, 2026, while restoration and accessibility improvements are completed. The second and third floors of the Main Library are scheduled to reopen to the public on Monday, October 5th, 2026. The renovation only affects the Main Library building, and several other library locations and services will remain available throughout the closure. About the Hoboken Public Library Renovation
The upcoming work is part of the Hoboken Public Library’s Capital Master Plan, which was created in 2017 to guide long-term improvements to the library’s facilities. The project is supported by funding from the New Jersey Historic Trust.

The renovation is designed by New Jersey architecture and planning firm Clarke Caton Hintz and will focus on restoring the building’s original character while adding more accessible and modern features.
Historic details throughout the building will be repaired and restored, including the original plaster walls, pressed-metal ceilings, cornices, frieze tiles, flooring, millwork, and bookcases. A historic paint scheme will also be used to bring back the appearance of the original library.
Accessibility Improvements
One of the biggest accessibility improvements will be a new vertical platform lift connecting the first floor and mezzanine level.
Hoboken Public Library Director Jennie Pu shared the following in a press release with The Hoboken Girl team:
“This renovation reflects years of planning by the Library Board of Trustees and the generous support of the New Jersey Historic Trust,” Jennie said in a statement. “This project will deliver spaces worthy of a building and a community that has loved its library for over 130 years.”
Library Services Available During the Closure
While the Main Library is closed, residents can continue accessing library services throughout Hoboken. The Grand Street Branch, located at 124 Grand Street on the second floor of the Multi-Service Center, will remain fully open, while The Learning Center at 401 Harrison Street will provide adult computer access during the closure. Self-service library lockers outside the Main Library, the Grand Street Branch, and the Hoboken Historical Museum will also remain operational for picking up holds. Children’s and teen programs will continue at the Grand Street Branch and other partner locations throughout the city, and storytimes will move to outdoor parks when weather permits.
