Baking Mama, a popular bakery in Hoboken known for its best-in-the-state chocolate chip cookies, is expanding by adding a second, bigger space on the other side of town. The bakery will be taking over the former Sugarsuckle storefront at 600-604 Newark Street. The expansion will give Baking Mama’s shop more reach in the community. Sugarsuckle officially closed its doors on July 10th after 3+ years in business. Another popular bakery in Hoboken, Sugarsuckle made a name for itself with its stunning creations that had a clean and modern look. Owner Jennifer Choi wrote on the brand’s Instagram account, “In 2011, I began this journey which led me to the opening of Sugarsuckle in 2018. It has been an absolute pleasure being able to work with you in designing one-of-a-kind custom desserts. I will cherish all of the memories I made along the way.”

^ The new space

The original location at 88 Hudson Street is a quaint shop boasting some of the tastiest desserts in town. In 2015, Tina Rivera pursued her passion for baking and has never looked back.

The increased space at the second location has allowed Tina to start the soft opening for the brand new kids and adult baking party packages and one-on-one classes. With that extra space on Newark Street, Tina is considering offering coffee and breakfast plates as well.

Additionally, patrons will be able to rent out the new location for private parties.

“I am grateful and humbled for the support of the community in our small family business. I am happy that they appreciate the details and love that we give to our baked products,” Tina told Hoboken Girl.

What to Expect

The AAPI- and woman-owned shop offers ready-made desserts and custom-baked goods. The shop’s location at the corner of Hudson and Newark streets is temptingly convenient if your commute involves walking on Hudson and/or Newark Street from the PATH, as it’s all too easy to walk down the block for a delicious detour.

One of Tina’s big sellers is the macaroon selection: salted caramel, lemon, maple bacon, and pistachio are just a few of the delicious ones. She also makes cake balls (chocolate, red velvet, and vanilla), cupcakes, meringues, brownies, and chocolate chip cookies, which by the way, landed a spot on Yelp’s 2021 list of the best chocolate chip cookies in the country!

Exciting news – Tina plans to expand her selection of allergy-friendly menu items as she has gotten tons of requests from customers.

Her secret to success? “No excuses, that’s the only way to learn. There are no shortcuts. I don’t have any secret ingredients nor 100-year-old attic-hidden recipes. My ingredients are simple: focus on quality, patience, passion, faith, and a dash of creativity.”

Baking Mama’s second location will be opening sometime in the middle of November.
