Two separate construction projects in Hoboken will result in ongoing road closures along main routes in town. Work on Hoboken’s Rebuild by Design project will see 14th Street closed between Washington and Bloomfield through mid-fall. Work on the Hudson Place Reconstruction Project will see closures and limited access around the Hoboken Terminal. The work will also impact NJ Transit bus routes, parking, pedestrian access, and pickup locations. Read on for what Hoboken residents need to know about the upcoming closures.
14th Street Closure + NJ Transit Bus Detours
Beginning Monday, July 20th, 14th Street will be closed to vehicles in both directions between Washington Street and Bloomfield Street. The closure is expected to remain in place through mid-fall, though pedestrians will still be able to access businesses throughout the area.
The work is part of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s Rebuild by Design Hudson River project. Crews will construct part of the project’s Resist structure, including a gate across 14th Street at Washington Street that is designed to help protect the area from Hudson River storm surge flooding. A temporary traffic signal will also be installed at Washington and 15th Streets in the coming weeks.
NJ Transit buses traveling toward New York City will use Washington Street, turn onto 15th Street, and then turn right onto Willow Avenue before returning to their regular routes.
Buses heading toward Hoboken Terminal will travel along Willow Avenue to 11th Street, stopping at 13th Street and Willow Avenue and 11th Street and Willow Avenue. Buses will then turn onto Washington Street and continue south toward the terminal.
Several bus stops will also be temporarily relocated or closed.

NJ Transit will install temporary signs in English and Spanish to direct riders, and Hoboken Police officers will be stationed in the area as needed to assist with traffic, detours, and pedestrian safety.

Hudson Place Closure Near Hoboken Terminal
A separate closure will begin on Hudson Place between Hudson Street and River Street on Monday, July 20th. The work is part of the Hudson Place Reconstruction Project and the larger Hoboken Connect development.
Crews will replace curbs, sidewalks, drainage infrastructure, and hydrants before fully reconstructing the roadway. Construction is expected to take approximately five weeks, with work generally happening Monday through Friday from 7AM to 4PM. Limited Saturday or off-hour work may also be necessary. (
Hudson Place will remain closed to vehicles 24 hours a day, seven days a week during this phase of construction. The south sidewalk will also close, and pedestrians will be directed to the north sidewalk using a designated crosswalk.
Additional traffic changes include:
- No vehicles will be permitted to turn onto Hudson Place.
- Eastbound Observer Highway between Washington Street and Hudson Street will be restricted to NJ Transit buses and NJ Transit Police vehicles.
- Other eastbound vehicles will be detoured onto Washington Street.
- Parking will be prohibited on both sides of River Street.
- River Street will close to vehicles between Hudson Place and Newark Street.
- Authorized delivery vehicles may use established loading zones on Hudson Street and Newark Street.
The Hop shuttle’s pickup and drop-off area will temporarily move to River Street. Taxis and other shuttles will use the west side of Hudson Street for pickups and drop-offs.
Hudson Place is expected to reopen to local and public traffic after the first phase of construction is completed. All construction schedules are subject to change because of weather, utility conflicts, subsurface conditions, and other unexpected issues.
