Travel this summer (at least for those on Instagram) has ranged from Italy to Arizona and beyond, but one ol’ reliable spot that many love to escape to is the Catskill Mountains. Defined by a stunning mountain range that includes Windham Mountain, Hunter Mountain, and the Ashokan Reservoir — spanning three New York counties, this large area in upstate New York has seen a massive resurgence in popularity over the last decade. The Catskills are both a known and hidden gem type of vacation situation — with boutique hideaways, Airbnbs, and larger hotels, hiking galore, quaint shops, and sleepy downtowns to explore. But where to stay when the area is so large and there’s so much to see and do? Lucky for you, we’ve stayed at a plethora of hotels and boutique motels in the Catskill Mountains. Here are some of the best places to stay in the Catskills if you’re looking for a hotel situation — known for their boutique vibes, rustic charm, and unique interior design choices.

Deer Mountain Inn | 790 Co Road 25, Tannersville, NY

Deer Mountain Inn is a more rustic atmosphere than the aforementioned lodging; think crackling fire, dark mahogany decor, and actual taxidermy on the walls. It’s about 10 minutes to the Hunter Mountain ski lift, and it feels like a full mountain escape.

Eastwind Hotel | 5088 NY-23, Windham, NY

Windham is positioned in a beautiful part of the northern Catskills, and East Windham has quickly become known as a perfect Catskill getaway spot. With motel-style rooms, in-hotel (main house) rooms, and triangular-shaped huts called ‘Lushnas’ — no matter the room you pick, you’ll enjoy yourself. There’s also an outdoor sauna and walking path on the property, with tons of hiking nearby.

Often rented out fully for weddings, the Glen Falls House in Round Top is quite the gem. The Trotwood is its in-house restaurant, which is worth a visit even if you can’t stay the night. There’s also a pool across the way in the summer, but it’s a stunner any time of year.

Hutton Brickyards | 200 North Street, Kingston

A dog-friendly hotel on the waterfront in Kingston, Hutton Brickyards is newer to the lodging scene and is giving the area a fresh take on upscale hospitality in the Catskills. Luxury cabins and a spa experience are the cherry on top of this unique river-side experience in downtown Kingston.

Maker Hotel | 302 Warren Street, Hudson, NY

This boutique hotel isn’t large, but it sure is worth a visit, even if for a cup of coffee. Inside the Maker Hotel, positioned at the center of Hudson’s downtown — right across the Hudson from Catskill, NY, is a beautifully adorned space that makes Instagram-worthy a reality. If stopping by Hudson during the day, you’ll find eclectic, curated antique and furniture shops, colorful brick buildings, cafes, and not far from the main drag — a massive antique warehouse (with a brewery around the back!) that is the mecca of all furniture curations.

Scribner’s Catskill Lodge | 13 Scribner Hollow Road, Hunter, NY

Hunter Mountain has a variety of places to stay and hotels for any season, but Scribner’s is a newer hotel that includes an ice skating rink in the winter and a pool with mountain views in the summer. It’s dog-friendly, and there’s a great restaurant-bar inside the hotel, only a few minutes’ drive from the slopes.

Given a nod by HGTV as ‘one of the most amazing hotels in the entire country,’ The Roxbury is a colorful and quaint motel situation located in Roxbury. Although the town is a bit of a sleepy Catskills vibe, Roxbury is self-described as: “Imagine if Alice in Wonderland married Willy Wonka and set up residence in Oz.” It’s an experience, and it has numerous nods and accolades from national publications if you don’t want to take our word for it.

Tiny House Resort | 2776 Co Road 23B, South Cairo, NY

Goats, glamping, and tiny houses = Think Big, a Tiny House Resort. There are over a dozen tiny houses on the party, ducks and chickens that lay eggs each morning for breakfast, and a creek + pool for enjoyment in the summer. Each house is fully equipped with an oven, fridge, and shower/full bathroom. It’s an experience that’s worth even just a night’s stay if you’re in the area. Did we mention there are goats?

Urban Cowboy Lodge | 37 Alpine Road Big Indian, NY

Originally hailing from Brooklyn, the Urban Cowboy Lodge concept embodies its namesake with its decor. There’s a full bar and restaurant on-site, a swimming hole, and a sauna. The area of Big Indian is right near Phoenicia, so a visit to the regionally-famous Phoenicia Diner is in order.

Literally right next door to East Wind, Union + Post is a new motel — and even if you’re staying nearby at Eastwind or another northern Catskills locale, you’ll have to go to its restaurant for dinner.

Watergrass Hill Bed & Breakfast | 105 Phillies Bridge Road, New Paltz, NY

For a more quaint experience, Watergrass Hill BnB is the spot. It’s an adorable 1800s farmhouse-turned-bed and breakfast that is owned by a former Hoboken resident, Alana Colucci, who quit her job and decided to move back to her hometown and convert the spot into lodging. The New Paltz area is chock full of restaurants, breweries, distilleries, and hiking trails — so you’ll be in good hands when you arrive. PS: The chef makes breakfast for you on-site each morning!

Woodstock Way | 10 Waterfall Way, Woodstock, NY

This central Woodstock hotel is a diamond in the adorable rough that is downtown Woodstock, New York. The rooms are designed to have a rustic-yet-chic vibe, with massive floor-to-ceiling windows and Brooklinen sheets (IYKYK). There’s a small waterfall right outside the rooms in plain view from the decks, and the walk to town is about .03 minutes, as you’re basically right in the center of town. Pro tip: Make a reservation at Silvia or Cucina; you won’t be disappointed.

Yovan (YO1) Health Resort | 420 Anawana Lake Road, Monticello, NY

This is the place to go for all things restoration and healing. As if the Catskills weren’t peaceful enough already, this luxury health and wellness destination has a host of holistic healing practices that are meant to help recenter and revitalize. Yovan means youth in Sanskrit — which is one of the goals here: to tap into your eternal youth + inner child. As pictured above, it sits on 1,300 acres of land (we know, gorgeous), and each visit can be personalized based on each guest, where you choose from options like yoga, acupuncture, and more.
