You might be reading a lot about farmers’ markets and that’s simply because, well, ’tis the season. As the weather warms up, it’s the time of year where we’re all itching to get outside and peruse the aisles of a local farmers’ market for some fresh produce {or simply for a weekend adventure}. Of course, with the COVID-19 pandemic in full swing and NJ Governor Phil Murphy having extended the state of emergency for an additional 30 days, the promise of open farmers’ markets may not seem likely on the horizon. However, fellow Hobokenites, we’ve got some good news — the  Hoboken Farmer’s Market in Church Square Park will be returning this year on June 2nd — here’s the full story.

The Details

In a press release issued on May 12th, Hoboken Mayor Ravi Bhalla announced that the Hoboken Farmers’ Market {located on Garden Street between 4th and 5th Streets} will, in fact, be returning this year.

“One outdoor activity that we have determined can safely re-open with added precautions, beginning June 2, is our Hoboken Farmers’ Market, located on Garden Street between 4th and 5th Streets. I believe it’s important for residents to continue to have access to fresh produce and products in order to stay healthy, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic,”  he said.

He continued, “The vendors and staff have agreed to additional social distancing regulations including increasing the space between each vendor by operating on both sides of the block, a requirement of all staff, vendors, and customers to wear glove[s] and face masks, and each side of the street operating in one direction with pedestrian traffic. I ask residents to please take extra precautions when heading to the farmers’ market.”

Just an FYI: This is not to be confused with the Garden Street Farmers’ Market on 14th Street, which is privately owned and recently announced via its website that it will be “Closed For 2020 Season.” According to sources, this was a decision made by the owners.

Other Markets in the Area

While some markets in the area have yet to announce whether or not they will be open for the 2020 season, others have already begun to open.

Two Jersey City markets have confirmed their opening for this year, in accordance with social distancing guidelines, of course. The Hamilton Park Farmers’ Market announced that it will “open as a ‘pick-up point’ which means all orders must be made online and in advance.”

“Although this is how the market will open the season, we hope to secure enough volunteers to open to a ‘purchase point’ market at a later date,” according to its website.

The Historic Downtown Jersey City Farmers’ Market returned this past Monday, May 11th, and will operate on a Monday/Thursday schedule. And to ensure everyone’s safety, the HDSID Market is complying with all social distancing recommendations to keep vendors and shoppers safe. The market will span both the Grove PATH Plaza and the First Green area of the Newark Avenue Pedestrian Mall for added space, and to take it to another level, for the first time ever, shoppers will be able to browse online, make purchases, pay, and pick up groceries curbside at the market. You can browse the offerings here.
