At the start of the new year, we’re looking for ways to keep up with our fitness goals — but we’re not the only ones. Gyms can get really crowded this time of year and when it’s cold and dark it can be difficult to get out for a workout. This is a great time to switch things up and find some new ways to be active indoors without just going to the gym. Keep reading for some unique ways to be active indoors in Jersey City + Hoboken this winter.

This 25,000-square-foot indoor rock climbing and bouldering facility is perfect for both beginning and experienced climbers. Day passes and memberships are available plus The Gravity Vault offers classes if you want a more personalized experience. Climbing is a fun change of pace and a great way to meet other active people in Hoboken.
Join a Basketball League
Consider signing up for an indoor adult basketball league if you want to stay accountable for your fitness goals. It’s so much harder to back out of a workout if you’re part of a team. Plus, playing basketball is a fun way to stay active and meet people without going to a crowded gym and trying to find a spot to lift weights. Next Basket Wins and ZogSports both run basketball leagues in Hoboken.
Play Ping Pong at Play Hoboken
Not only is ping pong fun, but it’s also great cardio. Play Hoboken brings you multiple ping-pong tables along with billiards, e-sports, darts, board and card games, golf, and more. Located on the 3rd floor at 1012 Grand Street, Play Hoboken is open every day of the week.
Register for a Volleyball Team
If basketball isn’t your thing, why not join a volleyball league? ZogSports puts on co-ed volleyball in both Hoboken and Jersey City. This league allows individual sign-ups so it can be a great way to build your social circle this winter.
Play Weeknight Dodgeball
Throw it back to high school gym class and register for a dodgeball league. We like this option because it’s an active co-ed sport that is easy to play even if you’ve been off the dodgeball court for years. Hive Athletic runs this program and offers three league options — casual, intermediate, and competitive.
Take a Dance Class at The Studio
One of the best ways to shake up your fitness routine is to sign up for a dance class. Whether you are a beginner or an advanced dancer, you can find a class at The Studio for your skill level. This adults-only studio has a calendar filled with jazz, tap, ballet, hip-hop, and other dance classes. Couples can even sign up for wedding dance classes to stay active and practice for their big day.
Swim at an Indoor Pool
The six-lane indoor Pershing Field Pool is a perfect option for anyone who wants to maintain their fitness without working out in the cold. This public pool charges a small fee (discounted for Jersey City residents) and hours are listed online. Adult swim is currently available on weekdays from 7AM-11AM.
Play Indoor Pickleball
The pickleball craze is still going strong. Anyone who wants to join in on the fun can sign up for the ZogSports indoor pickleball league. The winter season is held at Saint Peter’s University’s Yanitelli Recreational Life Center on Tuesday and Thursday nights. Interested pickle ballers can sign up as an individual or a team.
Go Ice Skating
Put your fitness goals on ice by heading to the Pershing Park indoor ice rink. Locals can use the ice rink for a small fee and the rec center even offers skates for rent if you don’t have your own. The rink is currently open Thursday – Sundays but check the website for the most up-to-date hours.
Bowl at Hudson Lanes
Whether you want to join a league or are just looking for something fun to do inside for an afternoon, Hudson Lanes is one of the best places to go bowling in the Jersey City + Hoboken area. With 60 lanes there’s plenty of space for everyone plus you can sign up for the Striker’s Savings Club to get coupons and discounts.
