Omakase lovers of Hudson County no longer have to brave the bridges, tunnels, or ferries to get their fix. Nigiri by Honshu has brought the delicious and theatrical Omakase experience to Downtown Jersey City, and it comes with a view. The redesigned and finished patio at Honshu, at 95 Greene Street, now offers guests an intimate experience of four-, five-, or six-course omakase-style sushi overlooking Greene Street and a view of the Freedom Tower while seated at the sushi bar. That is if diners aren’t too busy watching the chefs at work. Read on for more about this new addition to the Hudson County sushi scene, Nigiri by Honshu.

All About Nigiri by Honshu

For those who don’t know, Omakase literally means, ‘I’ll leave it up to you’ and is the phrase used for a dining experience of being face-to-face with the chef. This allows the chef to see diners’ reactions to dishes and gauge the experience in real-time with each bite. It’s typically known as a more luxurious sushi experience and is not available in all sushi restaurants.

The chefs at Nigiri craft the weekly menus based on what ingredients are available and fresh, making each experience new, unique, and delicious. Utilizing the freshest ingredients allows for a delicious and diverse menu including smoked amberjack, fatty tuna with truffle, and yellowtail with fried garlic, pickle, and jalapeño. Nigiri has exciting options for every palate.

The experience is offered at both lunch and dinner, making it a great option for those who work in the area to pop away for a real treat. With each plate served, the chefs explain every detail. From the origin of the fish to the reason why the flavors blend together. They also show off the special qualities of each dish.

For example, before any plate with caviar is served, the specific caviar used is presented so diners know what type they are eating. Another special treat is seeing an actual wasabi plant. Most of us only know wasabi in the form served with our sushi takeout. At Nigiri, the whole plant is presented before shaving off the specific amount used to add just a hint of flavor to the fish.

Diners looking for a flashy experience are going to be thrilled to see toppings on their dishes like gold flake and fresh truffle. For dessert, try the Uji Matcha Crème brûlée:  it’s light and fresh, a wonderful ending to a well-balanced, surprisingly filling meal.

Aside from the chefs explaining each dish, the wait staff is also incredibly knowledgeable about both the food and drink menus. The extensive Sake menu can be overwhelming for newbies, but the team has great recommendations based on flavor preferences. There is also a wide variety of craft cocktails, wine, and Japanese beer and whiskey. It’s a great place for an after-work happy hour, team building, girls’ night out, or a date.  Nigiri by Honshu is now open for reservations at lunch and dinner.
