• A Comprehensive Guide to Hoboken + Jersey City Live Music Spots

    Maxwell’s was the venue for live music in Hoboken since the ‘70s and a launching pad for a diverse group of emerging artists like R.E.M., The Replacements, New Order, Pixies, Smashing Pumpkins, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Hole, and Nirvana. The cherry on top is that  Jersey’s own Bruce Springsteen filming parts of a music video there for “Glory Days” in 1985. Over several decades, the venue attracted a wide variety of acts looking for a change from the New York City concert spaces across the river. Maxwell’s initially closed its doors on July 31st, 2013 {flashback to throngs of screaming fans running to see JT filming a commercial there}, and reopened as Maxwell’s Tavern in 2014, under new ownership. But ever since its final closing in February of 2018, it’s been a mystery of where locals can listen to live music in the area. 

    Don’t fret, as Hoboken + Jersey City’s musical tradition continues on with tons of entertainment options; there is always a bar, pub, restaurant, and even a coffee shop or two, featuring live music from up-and-coming groups, solo artists, cover bands, or local faves from pop, electric and rock to jazz and acoustic.     Battello {502 Washington Boulevard, Jersey City}

    Enjoy music from some of the area’s best musicians on select Fridays + Saturdays beginning at 5:00PM. Click here to view the upcoming artists.

    Bobby Dee’s JC {49 Beacon Avenue, Jersey City}

    Bobby Dee’s has live music every Friday night at 7:00PM and every Tuesday they alternate between open mic comedy and open mic music. On Sunday nights at 7:00PM they have live Irish music through the end of the summer. Stay tuned for more live music on Saturdays coming soon. 

    bwè kafe’s {1002 Washington Street, Hoboken + 140 River Drive South, Jersey City}

    Check their website for the monthly open mic nights. At the Hoboken location, it is free to join and listen from 8:00PM-10:00PM. At the Jersey City location, open mic nights are held every last Saturday of the month. There is a $5 suggested donation from 7:30PM-9:30PM.

    Dino and Harry’s Steakhouse {163 14th Street, Hoboken}

    The steakhouse features light jazz on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and on Fridays and Saturdays, they enhance the romantic experience of date night with elegant piano music.

    Corkscrew Bar {61 Congress Street, Jersey City}

    Join in or listen to open mic night on Tuesdays at 8:00PM.

    Elysian Café {1001 Washington Street, Hoboken}

    Fridays + Saturdays listen to live music from local performers at 10:00PM.

    Farside Tavern {531 Washington Street, Hoboken}

    Farside hosts live music from 4:00PM-8:00PM on Saturdays.

    Finnegan’s Pub {734 Willow Avenue, Hoboken}

    Finnegan’s pub hosts live music night events each week. On Mondays listen to bluegrass jam, and on Thursday, Friday and Saturday enjoy live music, and on Sunday enjoy open mic night.

    FM Bar {340 3rd Street, Jersey City}

    Honoring the days of FM radio, check out their daily calendar of live music showcasing local rock, funk, and soul bands. Mondays are reserved for a fabulous open mic night showcasing new talent.

    Fox + Crow {594 Palisade Avenue, Jersey City}

    Live in the parlor, check out their live music every Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, times vary by date and artist.

    Grand Vin {500 Grand Street, Hoboken}

    Grand Vin hosts live music almost every night of the week. Expect performances on Sundays from 6:00PM-9:00PM, Tuesdays from 7:00PM-10:00PM, on Wednesdays + Thursdays from 8:00PM-11:00PM/12:00AM, and Fridays + Saturdays from 9:00PM to 12:00AM/1:00AM. 

    Halifax at the W Hotel {225 River Street, Hoboken}

    Step into the Living Room lounge to unwind over cocktails and listen to live music every Friday night from 8:00PM-11:00PM.

    House of ‘Que {340 Sinatra Drive, Hoboken}

    Listen to live bands every Friday night from 7:00PM-9:00PM and every Saturday night starting at 9:00PM come for dueling pianos, a high-energy interactive performance by the Flying Ivories.

    Jersey Social {837 Jersey Avenue, Jersey City}

    Madame Claude Bis {390 4th Street, Jersey City}

    On Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7:30PM, be entertained by the owner with his gypsy jazz band Manouche Bag.

    McSwiggan’s Pub {110 1st Street, Hoboken}

    Monty Hall {43 Montgomery Street, Jersey City}

    Moore’s Lounge {189 Monticello Avenue, Jersey City}

    For the jazz lovers, every Friday aspiring future jazz professionals can join a jam session and all enjoy the delicious fish fry made from Ms. Ruth’s legendary recipe. On Sunday’s, there is the weekly “Meet the Artist” series where world-renowned and extraordinary artists meet with young, emerging talents, in a “Jazz Clinic” type of setting, performing for a local audience wishful to learn and exchange knowledge about the context in which jazz music has emerged and is played today.

    Onieal’s {343 Park Avenue, Hoboken}

    Every Wednesday night, this Hoboken locale features free live music 7:00PM-10:00PM.

    Pilsener Haus + Biergarten {1422 Grand Street, Hoboken}

    An Austro-Hungarian restaurant and bar set in a turn of the century Bierhall with an adjoining, outdoor Biergarten, Pilsener has live music every Friday night and the on last Sunday of every month they have a children’s band for brunch. Check their Instagram for programming. 

    Porta {135 Newark Avenue, Jersey City}

    Porta hosts cover bands on the main floor every Saturday night from 11:30PM-2:30AM. There is a live jazz band every Saturday + Sunday from 12:00PM-3:00PM during brunch on the main floor. Their rooftop entertainment schedule rotates between bands and DJs all summer long, but there are a few Thursdays + Fridays a month they host live bands on the roof, from 6:00PM- 9:00M or 7:00PM-10:00PM, so keep an eye on their calendar on their website or check out their @portajerseycity Instagram story to stay up to date on the fun.

    Saku {936 Park Avenue, Hoboken}

    Enjoy sushi and live music on Thursdays in the light room from 7:00PM-10:00PM.

    The Archer {176 Newark Avenue, Jersey City}

    The bar features live music every week on Wednesday and Thursday. Wednesdays from 7:30PM-10:30PM is bluegrass with The Go Bailers, a bluegrass trio featuring special guests on a weekly basis. Then on Thursday from 8:00PM-11:00PM is jazz and blues standards with or curated by The Blue Vipers of Brooklyn. Come early to catch the happy hour specials: $5 pints of Pilsner and $8 classics — sip on a Manhattan, an Old Fashioned, a Daiquiri, or a Bees Knees from 5:00PM-7:00PM.

    The Cuban {333 Washington Street, Hoboken}

    Listen to live music during Sunday brunch.

    The Liberty House Restaurant {76 Audrey Zapp Drive, Jersey City}

    Catch live music Thursdays from 7:00PM-10:00PM, Fridays from 7:30PM-11:00PM, Saturdays from 7:30PM-11:00PM, and jazz Sunday brunches from 11:30AM-3:00PM.

    The Shepherd + the Knucklehead {1313 Willow Avenue, Hoboken}

    The Winston {73 Hudson Street, Hoboken}

    Every Thursday night from 8:00PM-10:00PM come here to listen to live steel drums.

    the Underground {116 Newark Avenue, Jersey City}

    Mondays is piano bar night, and on Wednesdays from 7:00PM-12:30AM, a variety of music from jazz to rat pack and burlesque to pop. Enjoy more live music on Saturdays at 7:00PM and meet and greet other artists from 9:30PM-1:30AM every Sunday.

    Union Hall {306 Sinatra Drive, Hoboken}

    Listen to live music every Thursday at 7:00PM, with the Manhattan skyline backdrop.

    White Eagle Hall {337 Newark Avenue, Jersey City}

    Jersey City’s concert and performing arts venue in a restored and renovated historic theater, check out their calendar of an all-star line-up of upcoming shows. The catch is that White Eagle Hall is standing room only, no seats. Buy box office tickets at Tunes in Hoboken.

    Wild Moose Saloon {30 Newark Street, Hoboken} 

    The All-American bar is only two blocks away from the Hoboken Path Station. Listen to live music every Saturday from 7:00-9:00PM.

    Willie McBride’s {616 Grand Street, Hoboken}

    Bands from all over the Tri-State perform here every Friday and Saturday night. As an added bonus, call ahead for a free limo ride and no cover charge to the venue. Contact them at 201-681-7550.
