About the Owners

Anand Patel and Spoorthi Kumar are entrepreneurs who were both inspired by their Indian childhood memories of the masala chai. They also had an interest in local coffee sourcing. They wanted to open a coffee shop that had high-quality coffee and had a strong hint of those childhood memories of the masala chai.

While the coffee is sourced from different countries, the tea is mainly sourced from India. Anand believes that getting into the ground reality research has helped them craft a menu that keeps people coming back for more! Anand jokes saying, “We taste bad coffee so you don’t have to”. The quest for the best included exploring coffee estates throughout India, trying to source the best supplies, The experimentation with the menu is truly what has us all gripped — from Rose Chai to Masala chai and the cold brew.

While Anand and Spoorthi might be the standing pillars behind Hidden Grounds, they truly attribute their success to every member of the team. “It is more like a labor of love, and group effort of every single person for the past 8 years that has got us to where we are today,” says Anand.

What to Expect at the New Location

Hidden Grounds

With five successful locations, and a sixth ready to open in the third week of August, the Hidden Grounds team’s mission is to create an experience unique to each location, where customers can feel a sense of comfort and warmth with the decor and staff. The drinks menu will be mostly the same as the other locations, while the decor and feel will set it apart to better match the neighborhood.

With brick walls, baby pink seats (that perfectly match the famous Rose Chai), hanging plants, and soft lighting,  residents will be transported into an oasis in the middle of the busy urban Jersey City neighborhood. The aesthetic is perfect to work from, grab a coffee on a date, or enjoy me-time by the sunlit window seats overlooking busy Newark Avenue.

The real highlight of this location will be the food menu. The house-made doughnuts bring in the distinct flavors of Indian fusion, namely the Rasmalai doughnut and Gulab Jamun doughnut, both of which are celebrated Indian desserts worth every bite!

The coffee shop’s drink menu would be incomplete without a standard cold brew, and the Hidden Grounds team has turned it up a notch with several varieties named after Jersey City locations. The Waterfront cold brew is made with simple syrup, the Liberty Park cold brew is made with caramel,  and the Heights cold brew is made with lavender. The Rose Chai continues to be a staple on the menu and is made with chai extract, rose extract, with milk of choice and topped with rose petals and pistachios.
