A new restaurant serving up Haitian, Caribbean, and Latin cuisine is opening in Jersey City on June 4th, just in time for summer dining. Bettie’s Restaurant will be at 579 West Side Avenue and will feature authentic cuisine and creative twists on traditional dishes. Launching the Business
The well-known chef and digital creator Chef Benel decided to launch Black-owned Bettie’s Restaurant as a tribute to his mother, Bettie, who taught him how to cook at just nine years old. Talent and entrepreneurship run in their blood, as Bettie once operated her own successful catering company in the Dominican Republic, where Chef Benel worked his way from line cook to head chef.
In launching Bettie’s Restaurant, Chef Benel intends to use his experience as a chef to celebrate and share his mother’s favorite dishes with Jersey City residents and visitors.
“I know my mom is looking down and proud,” he wrote on Instagram. “She always told me to do what I love, and what I love is what she taught me.”
In addition to now operating Bettie’s Restaurant, Chef Benel also offers catering, private dinners, and chef tastings in Jersey City. You can watch his cooking videos on TikTok to learn how to make some of his go-to recipes — and get a taste of what’s to come at the new restaurant.

Bettie’s is now hiring servers, hosts, runners, dishwashers, and prep cooks to join its team. You can email your background and experience to info@bettiesrestaurant.com to apply for one of the positions.
After its opening on June 4th, the restaurant will be open Tuesdays to Thursdays from 5PM-10PM, Fridays and Saturdays from 5PM-12AM, and Sundays from 5PM-11PM. Diners can use Resy to make a reservation for the grand opening or for a later date.
