Here’s what several local experts shared about what to look for when determining a stylist’s expertise:
“First, make sure the stylist is certified in extensions,” shared Christine Gatto. “Executing the install is critical to achieve both the hair goal (look and feel) and maintaining hair health. It takes training and experience to master extension techniques.”
Ariella Mendez, owner of The Salon At Hoboken, shared that to determine a stylist’s expertise, clients should “look for photos of the stylist’s work grown out, look for photos showing the client over time to see if the scalp and hair still look healthy after months of wearing extensions.”
“Extensions should blend like they grew out of your own scalp—if they don’t, run,” says Chay Casey. “Look for someone who’s not just installing hair, but building a whole look,” she continued, “at the end of the day, it should feel effortless, comfortable, and unapologetically you.”
Amanda Tanko of Love Lane noted that it’s important to “look for someone trained in multiple methods – this shows they’re well-rounded and can recommend the most suitable option based on your hair type and lifestyle.”
“A great extension stylist,” Nazir El Cheikh, owner of NAZNAZ, added, “should be certified, have a solid portfolio, and provide personalized consultations.”
Lorraine Fred, owner of LHSBeauty Salon, agreed. “Look for certifications and training specifically in hair extensions.” She added, “Pay attention to how well the stylist listens to your needs and preferences—an excellent stylist will tailor the experience to you,” she said.
“Finding a stylist on IG is okay,” shared Delia Patente, owner of The Chique Collective, “however, if you aren’t familiar with extensions, there are things you won’t catch.” For example, it’s hard to determine if the sectioning is clean, if the parting is straight, if the right extension type was used for that client’s hair type, and the health and integrity of the hair. “Remember this isn’t a cheap service, so you want to make sure it’s what you want and not what the stylist wants just to make a few bucks and get a few followers and views on social media,” she concluded.

Hoboken
BOND Salon | 44 Hudson Place 3rd Floor + 425 Washington Street
Who we spoke to: Emma McJury, hairstylist at BOND Salon
Cost: BOND Salon does Bellami tape-ins, weft, and k-tips extensions. Prices start at $260, and move-ups start at $130. Contact BOND Salon for full pricing details.
Maintenance: Extensions need to be dried whenever they’re washed (especially at the root) to prevent mold and mildew. They also need to be treated like hair, so apply hair masks and oil. Emma says to make sure to brush your hair multiple times and day and make sure hair is detangled at the root (especially for k-tips, when it’s more grown out). Tape-ins last about two months (and hair can be used a few times), and k-tips last about 4-6 months (hair cannot be reused, no maintenance needed). There are three types of weft extensions — volume, infinity, and flex — which usually require one install and 2-3 move-ups when beads are 0.5 inches away from the scalp, followed by another install.

Color Matching: The salon has a lot of options for clients, from single colors to balayage, to highlighted and even peek-a-boo fashion colors. If a client changes their hair color along their extension journey, stylists can adjust the color right alongside them. Since the salon uses human hair extensions, the team can custom-color the extensions to match a client’s specific needs, for example, a bride for her wedding.
Maintenance: For tape-ins, the salon recommends re-application appointments be scheduled for 6-8 weeks, and for sew-ins, the salon recommends 8-10 weeks. Pricing depends on several factors, including desired length and volume, hair color and length, and the extension method best suited to the client. “At CARU, we don’t mark up the cost of hair—what we pay is what you pay,” Brittney said. “To ensure the best results, we ALWAYS start with a complimentary consultation. During this visit, we’ll discuss your vision, lifestyle, and budget, then walk you through the best options and exact pricing.”
Maintenance: Aside from clip-ins, all extension methods require regular maintenance to keep them looking and feeling their best. Most guests book a “move-up” appointment every 4–6 weeks, depending on the method and how their natural hair grows. With proper care, the extension hair itself can last anywhere from 6-8 months before needing to be replaced. Fine hair is our niche. A majority of our extension wearers have naturally fine hair & will always need extensions to achieve their dream hair. Our goal is to give women the confidence, and the tool we use is hair extensions,” she shared.

The Hair Room JC does not currently provide extension services, but the salon’s managing partner shared unbiased insights into choosing the right stylist and salon.
“Stylists post the things they want to attract, ” Emmy shared, “look for stylists that are posting the extension work they have done. The consultation is the most important part, and should be taken as seriously as the application appointment.”
Maintenance: Emmy shared that maintenance all depends on the application method, with tape-in extensions usually lasting 2-3 months, while keratin and beaded applications might last slightly longer.
“During the consultation, things like hair texture and type, desired look, daily maintenance and lifestyle should all be discussed and taken into consideration when mapping out follow-up appointments,” Emmy shared.
