Robert De Niro Spotted Filming in Jersey City

It’s been a big year for celeb sightings in Hudson County, and a new movie filming in the Bergen-Lafayette neighborhood of Jersey City brought Oscar winner Robert De Niro to town. The film, Inappropriate Behavior, is the most recent project with big names to use Jersey City as a backdrop. Last year, scenes from the soon-to-be released Bros and The Greatest Beer Run Ever were also shot in Jersey City. The star-studded cast for Inappropriate Behavior is also set to include Whoopi Goldberg and Rainn Wilson, among others. About the Film

According to Variety, the movie is directed by Tony Goldwyn, of Scandal fame. The plot follows Max Bernal, played by Bobby Cannavale, as he moves back in with his father after blowing up his marriage and career. Robert De Niro plays his father.

The film is being described as a road-trip comedy, as Max works on co-parenting his autistic son, Ezra, played by William Fitzgerald, with his ex-wife Jenna, played by Rose Byrne, who is Bobby Cannavale’s real life partner. Max and Jenna are at odds on how to parent Ezra, so Max kidnaps Ezra to take him on a road trip. The cast also includes Vera Farmiga, Rainn Wilson, and Whoopi Goldberg.

What We Know

Filming began on Monday, September 19th in the Bergen-Lafayette neighborhood of Jersey City, per Jersey Digs. According to a casting notice, filming will continue in the area through mid-October. Several blocks near Arlington Park, including portions of Ocean, Bramhall, and Madison Avenues, are being used. The area is full of historic brownstones. New Jersey has become a popular destination for filmmaking not just because it’s beautiful and has a lot to offer filmmakers. There are many tax credit programs available to companies who come to the Garden State with their projects. Cities like Jersey City have dedicated film offices to help coordinate permitting and community relations between a film crew and the neighborhood. Several blockbuster films have used Jersey City as a backdrop including The Joker and Men in Black.

Other Celebs in Hudson County

It’s been a busy year for celebrity sightings in the area. Some of the celebs who have been spotted include TikTok star Lynja, shopping at the Hoboken Trader Joe’s; and Samuel L. Jackson and Uma Thurman throughout Hoboken as they filmed The Kill Room. Mark Wahlberg was spotted in Jersey City taking a break from filming Our Man From Jersey. Actor Penn Badgley is a big fan of bwe kafe in Hoboken, being spotted with one of the coffee shop’s logoed mugs.

Several films that shot in Hudson County in 2021 are making their way to theaters. Big name stars Anne Hathaway and Sir Anthony Hopkins filmed scenes from their film Armageddon Time in Jersey City last year. The film recently debuted at the Toronto Film Festival and be in theaters later this fall. Also in theaters this fall is The Greatest Beer Run Ever, starring Bill Murray and Zac Efron. Zac Efron was spotted in fall of 2021 in Jersey City filming scenes for the movie, which is based on a true story about a North Bergen man. Gay rom-com Bros, starring Billy Eichner, was also filmed in Jersey City last year. The film is now in theaters.
