After opening in October of last year at 152 Newark Street in Hoboken, Verizza, a pizzeria that specialized in artisan Italian food, has announced that it has closed. However, pizza will continue to live on at this storefront as the owner of The Madison Bar + Grill, Dave Carney will be taking over Verizza with a new vision. Read on to learn what we know about the sudden closure of Verizza in Hoboken and what the local restaurant owner, Carney, plans to do with the restaurant.

About Verizza

Verizza, opened by three Italian friends who all share a common passion for pizza, hoped to shift the perception of pizza delivery, proving that gourmet pizza can be enjoyed in the comfort of your home and at an affordable price. The team aimed to deliver a contemporary style of Italian pizza that “combines fresh ingredients with a strong focus on the pizza dough,” they told Hoboken Girl when the pizzeria initially opened.

“Besides the classic toppings, we have crafted a selection of creative combinations, showcasing the best of contemporary Italian pizza,” one of the owners shared with Hoboken Girl. Patrons were able to choose from antipasti, salads, pizza, and dessert.

Now, less than ten months later, the owners have announced that Verizza’s doors are permanently closed, Patch reported.

On June 6th, the owners said in a statement, “As of yesterday, VERIZZA has shut its doors for good. Although our time in Hoboken has been short, we’ve had a blast and would like to thank all of our customers for your fantastic support. Expect to see something new on 152 Newark Street in the near future. If you have any outstanding credit or gift cards, please contact us by email before June 15th. CIAO E GRAZIE!!”

New Ownership

In response to locals asking why it closed via Instagram,  the owners explained, “We thank all our customers for your support. To answer the many who asked why we closed — we sold our operations to a different owner who will open a new concept over the summer.”

That owner, we know now, is Dave Carney of The Madison in Hoboken, Tap Into reported. Carney told the outlet, “I am going to do some decorating inside to make it warmer before reopening in September. My pies will be a cross between Neapolitan and Jersey-style—they’ll have that look but be crisp.” He added, “I’m also going to do individual Sicilian pies—thick crust but super crisp.”

Carney continued, “Of course, I’ll be using all imported products including San Marzano tomatoes, and some Buffalo mozzarella. The sit-down menu will be tight—five or six appetizers, three entrees. We will cook everything in the Marra Forni pizza oven, and the focus will be on the pizza.”
