A Journal Square project recently approved by the Jersey City Redevelopment Authority includes a 25,000-square-foot Whole Foods location. The project, located at 2873 John F. Kennedy Boulevard, is a 50-story mixed-use building, and Whole Foods will be on the ground floor. Read on for more about this project and what it will bring to Journal Square.
About the Project
The property at 2873 John F. Kennedy Boulevard is currently a two-story, curved mixed-use development. It’s next to the soon-to-reopen Loews Jersey Theater and across the street from the Journal Square PATH Station. On Tuesday, March 17th, the Jersey City Redevelopment Authority approved the plans, which will now go to final review by the Jersey City Planning Board on Tuesday, March 24th.
The new project includes over 800 residential units, including income-restricted units, plus two floors of retail space. The first floor is confirmed to be a 25,000 square foot Whole Foods location, according to a source close to the project. It will be a full-service Whole Foods. The second floor is another 25,000 square feet of retail, which has yet to be determined.

The development also includes a pedestrian plaza featuring public art, called Art Walk. Should the project be approved by the planning board, the groundbreaking could occur within the next six months.
Notably, the project does not include any parking spots, which would make it the first Jersey City grocery store without parking, according to Better Blocks NJ. A Target location opened in Journal Square in March 2026. Elsewhere in Jersey City, Whole Foods opened a location in downtown Jersey City in 2023, and Trader Joe’s is also opening a location in downtown Jersey City later in 2026.
This news follows another announcement about buildings in Journal Square. With the Pompidou art project officially cancelled, one of the sites will be developed into affordable housing. The property, at 808 Pavonia Avenue, will be a part of the Artwalk Towers development. Jersey City is partnering with Kushner Real Estate Group (KRE) to complete the project.
