The groundbreaking for the Journal Square development — a mixed-use building that includes both retail and residential space — took place in 2022, and plans to finish work by 2026. The residential space, The Journal, is now leasing as work continues on the retail space.

Residents have expressed mixed reactions on Target coming to Journal Square via social media. See below for a few posts:

@rabiassweetlife What do you guys think of this? #journalsquare #jerseycity #jerseycitytok ♬ MEMORIZING (SLOWED) – DJ DELACROIX & OXXED & Wintherduud

@tymckinnie Would’ve been happy about this a couple years ago ugh #journalsquare #jerseycity ♬ Walk on By – Dionne Warwick

@thechrisgarces I will still be BOYCOTTING TARGET! The minute they removed their DEI policies is the moment I stopped shopping. Their opening of the journal Square location won’t see a dollar a mine #target #journalsqaure #jerseycity #boycott #diversityandinclusion ♬ original sound – thechrisgarces

Background on Target Coming to Journal Square

Per HG’s previous reporting, here is what the Journal Square development will include once fully complete.

  • New transit connections
  • 41,000-square feet of retail space designed by Woods Bagot that will have a glass and steel exterior. Target is the only known store at this time.
  • Rental apartments, called The Journal, are now leasing
  • Amenities of the residential development include an indoor lap pool, spa, exercise rooms, squash courts, basketball court, bowling alley, lounges, party rooms, and a library. There are also two exterior terraces and an outdoor pool.
  • A new public plaza along John F. Kennedy Boulevard will include green space and a seating area for the public.
  • A curated sculpture garden, which will be part of Kushner’s $2.5 million investment in local arts initiatives.

The cost of the project has been estimated at close to $1 billion. The property was first acquired by Kushner Companies in 2014, and development began to move forward after legal issues were settled with the developer in 2020.

On June 15th, 2022, Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop announced that construction would finally begin, and the following day, the Target plans were announced.

HG’s previous reporting about the Journal Square Target can be found here.

This new Target adds to the list of other Targets in the area, including the location close to Hoboken at 100 14th Street in Jersey City, another in Edgewater at 543 River Road, the North Bergen location at 7101 Tonnelle Avenue, and one further away in Clifton at 30 Kingsland Road.
