After months of speculation, it has been confirmed that a Trader Joe’s is coming to downtown Jersey City. The grocery store will be located at 55 Hudson Street and will likely open in 2027. Read on for more about what we know about a Trader Joe’s coming to downtown Jersey City.
What We Know
In late summer 2025, a well-placed source shared with HG that a Trader Joe’s was coming to the building at 50-55 Hudson Street in Jersey City. We reached out to the building owner, architect, and Trader Joe’s to confirm the information.
Nakia Rhode, Public Relations Manager at Trader Joe’s, shared the following statement. “We are actively looking at hundreds of neighborhoods across the country, including many in New Jersey, as we hope to open more new neighborhood stores each year. At this time, we do not have a location confirmed at 50-55 Hudson Street. We list all of the stores that are opening soon on our website.”
Bud Perrone, a spokesperson for Tishman Speyer, the building owner, shared the following statement. “ I have nothing I am able to report to you right now on the retail piece of this development.”
We did not hear back from the architect, Handel Architects.

On Friday, October 24th 2025, the Instagram account for the Historic Downtown Special Improvement District (HDSID) in Jersey City posted about the situation. “ Rumor has it that Trader Joe’s is in the final stages of signing a lease right here in Downtown Jersey City, with plans to open in 2026!” No further information about the location was shared, and a spokesperson for HDSID was unable to share more information on the confirmations received.
A 2019 proposal on Washington Street in Jersey City sparked rumors of an incoming Trader Joes, but nothing came of it.
The location at 50-55 Hudson Street is a mixed-use project that will have two towers, per Multi-Housing News. The building at 55 Hudson Street is the first phase of the project, which will be a 58-story, 1,017-unit building with 60,000 square feet of retail space. The building at 55 Hudson Street is the second phase of the project, a 40-story, 924-unit apartment tower with 10,000 square feet for retail on the ground floor.
The Jersey City Times confirms that the grocery is coming to 55 Hudson Street, as of February 2026. The downtown Trader Joe’s will join other local grocery options, Whole Foods, ShopRite, and BJs in the neighborhood. The building at 55 Hudson Street is expected to be completed in early 2027.
