The term “ruck” is a military term used to signify a hump or forced march, where gear is put into a backpack or “ruck” and is carried over a long distance. The goal of this event is to continue raising funds and bringing awareness to those who fought beside U.S. allies. As well as to continue to support the non-profit charity, Badger Six — whose mission is to provide assistance to the families of the Afghan forces.

“We invite the Tri-State Area, both veterans, first responders, and civilians alike, to. join in this inaugural effort,” said Josh Lees, Coordinator of Ruck the River. He also added, “9/11 was a horrific event that changed the lives of so many. It is our hope that we can help change the lives of those who came to the aid of our great nation in its darkest hour,” via a press release.

Registration for this event is online now. As it is a physical movement event, the suggested gear to bring is a t-shirt, trousers, comfortable hiking boots or sneakers, a headlamp, and glow sticks. Other optional supplies to bring are extra layers, water, snacks, a raincoat, and spare clothing — which can depend on the weather on the day of the event. Also, the weight of the rucksack should be appropriate based on the participant’s preference but shouldn’t be to the point at which it is uncomfortable.
