A new cafe from the team behind Amelia’s Bistro has opened in Jersey City’s West Side. Three Thirds Cafe is now open in the 3 Acres building, located at 400 Claremont Avenue. With beans from modcup coffee roasters, another Jersey City-based brand, and baked foods from Baltazhar Bakery, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. We spoke to manager Alexa Sabato about what patrons can expect from the new cafe.

About the Cafe

While the cafe seems like a simple coffee shop, it’s the start of something bigger. Alexa said that the Amelia’s team has grand plans for the space. “We’re looking forward to starting a restaurant here, and have plans for a juice bar in the future.” The cafe’s location is on the ground floor of the 3 Acres building, a newly opened apartment building, meaning that it will serve community neighbors as well as building residents, including four-legged ones. “The space will be pet friendly, even inside,” Alexa said.

The name Three Thirds comes from the name of the building, which is named 3 Acres because the property is three acres in size. The space has exposed brick walls and ductwork visible, giving it an industrial-chic vibe. There are couches to lounge on and a rough-hewn wooden bar as well. The cafe is open from Monday through Sunday from 7AM to 5PM.

About the Menu

The menu at Three Thirds is small for now, but the team has big plans for expansion. The coffee beans are from Jersey City-based modcup coffee co. Something that sets the coffee and tea menu apart is the addition of CBD coffee. Alexa said that when researching the JC coffee scene, the team noticed that it was something missing from the overall offerings.

The coffee menu has all of the classics like cappuccinos and Americanos, and will add specialty drinks for each season. “For summer, we have frappes available, my favorite is the caramel,” Alexa said. The caramel syrup is house-made, and other flavored syrups available include hazelnut, french vanilla, chocolate, and toffee.  Teas are also available, and there are blueberry and lavender syrups available for teas. Non-dairy milks including oat, almond, and soy are also available.

The team hopes to have a liquor license later this summer to make creative cocktails.

The food menu focuses on baked goods, with fresh deliveries of breads and pastries from Baltazhar Bakery. On-site, the team makes scones, muffins, and waffles, and plans to add a doughnut machine soon. The waffles are available with Nutella, bananas, and the house-made caramel sauce, or strawberries and maple syrup. For those looking for a truly decadent treat, the waffles are available with ice cream on top.
