Attention North Jersey foodies: there’s a new dining experience to add to your restaurant bucket lists. Urban Tandoor, an Indian restaurant at 206 Harrison Avenue in Harrison, is serving a limited tableside butter chicken experience where, you guessed it, butter chicken is prepared next to your table. It’s as cool and unique as it sounds: live smoking, house-made butter selections, and an interactive presentation prepared right in front of you. The restaurant is currently one of the only New Jersey spots with this style of tableside butter chicken service, and after a recent visit, we can confirm it’s worth trying out. Harrison is more than just Sports Illustrated (formerly Red Bull) Stadium. Though just 1.33 square miles, this Hudson County town packs a mighty punch of historic sites and rich diversity. Urban Tandoor is one of those spots, a modern Indian restaurant that just launched a one-of-a-kind dining experience in North Jersey — a Tableside Butter Chicken Experience complete with live smoking, house-made butter selections, and an immersive presentation prepared right in front of you.
The restaurant currently does just one to two of these experiences per night, making it an exclusive menu reservation. According to the team, Urban Tandoor is also the first (and currently the only) restaurant in New Jersey with this style of tableside butter chicken service.
The experience begins with the chef bringing the dish directly to the table before smoking the chicken live in front of diners. You can then choose from different house-made butters as the final dish is prepared tableside. Between the smoke presentation, interactive elements, and rich aroma filling the table, the entire experience feels equal parts dinner and performance. Your phone will eat first, but it’s worth the wait, promise.

Ronith, our chef for the night, prepared the chicken right in front of us, and guided us through the whole experience: explaining each step, sharing the inspiration behind the concept, and making the tableside presentation feel *elevated.* To no one’s surprise, it was delicious. Between the smoky reveal, interactive prep, and flavorful chicken, the experience felt just as memorable as the meal itself.
Urban Tandoor has already made a name for itself in the North Jersey food scene, previously landing a spot on The Montclair Girl’s (our sister brand covering all things North Jersey) list of Top Restaurants in North Jersey. It sources almost all of its food from local North Jersey farmers, and you can taste that freshness in every dish. There’s also a full bar, and while we kept it zero-proof during our visit, we always appreciate a tasty bev. (PS: if you’re going zero-proof, order the mango lassi!).
Just around the corner from Urban Tandoor is the team’s other Harrison food spot, Mishtaan, a traditional Indian sweet spot. Ronith gave us a few of these treats to try, and they were so good: Milk Cake (Kalakhand), Kaju Katli, Bikaneri Kalakhand, etc.
Our takeaway? This newest offering adds another layer to the restaurant’s already wonderful dining experience. If you’re looking for something beyond the standard dinner reservation (date night, celebration, or foodie outing with friends), this is definitely one to add to the list.
