Julia Child once said a party without cake is just a meeting, and we’d have to agree. The 2024 version of this adage could be updated to reference a charcuterie board. The humble meat-and-cheese platter is transformed into a work of art by the cheesemongers at Van Hook Cheese + Grocery in downtown Jersey City. Patrons can choose from three different sizes of board, and cheese-only, meat-only, or meat-and-cheese varieties. Van Hook keeps 75+ different meats and cheese from all over the world in stock, and the team will help shoppers pick the tastiest treats for their party. The Insta-worthy trays are presented on handmade wooden boards and include accompaniments such as crackers, dried fruit, pickled things, and nuts. Perhaps the best-kept secret about Van Hook, besides its decadent grilled cheese menu, is that customers can bring in their own boards to get the VIP treatment. Trays must be ordered at least 24 hours in advance, and for big holidays like Thanksgiving or Christmas, the more lead time the better as the shop often books up.

Second to the Fourth of July, the Super Bowl is probably the most American holiday of the year — and no American holiday is complete without our beloved Mac + Cheese. GTK is serving up a half tray of mac and cheese loaded with pulled pork. The tray feeds anywhere from 6-12 people. You can pre-order it to Hoboken, Jersey City, or Weehawken on the GTK website. GTK has a number of different Super Bowl Sunday catering packages, which you can check out here.

Northern Soul is known for its laid-back vibes in Southwestern Hoboken, but its food is nothing to miss, especially if you’re vegetarian. The fried cauli wings are a MUST, along with sweet Thai chili sauce. If you’re into watching the game at home, delivery is easy peasy — but the space has good vibes if you’re looking for a TV screen scenario.

Soy Garlic Chicken Wings from Chicken Factory | 529 Washington Street, Hoboken

The Chicken Factory is a Korean barbecue spot that specializes in chicken and bibimbop. The soy garlic wings are a MUST-try along with other popular menu items like french fries and freshly-made coleslaw. Of course, don’t forget the Korean hot dogs which are dipped in batter and can be coated in diced potatoes, ramen, or hot Cheetos. For those with a sweet tooth, mochi doughnuts are also available in a variety of flavors like matcha, black sesame, taro, strawberry, and more.

It’s no surprise that Carpe Diem has been voted by our HG readers as the best in town for multiple years. Located in uptown Hoboken, this neighborhood pub is the perfect spot for delicious food while enjoying a game on the TV with friends. We’re big fans of the OG Buffalo wings and definitely recommend trying the sweet chili flavor if you’re looking for something sweet and spicy. Other honorable mentions at the Carpe include the boozy hot chocolate (a fave for the chilly winter months), coconut shrimp, and the mini burgers.

Otok Bakery has officially taken over Dom’s Bakery space and it comes to us from the owners of Schmitty’s. In an ode to Dom, the new spot has kept the legacy of Dom’s bread going by hiring bakers who worked with Dom for over 25 years. The spot recently added some breakfast sandwiches and buffalo chicken calzones to the menu but, make sure you get there before they sell out.

If you’re looking for something other than the classic wings and beer to serve at your Super Bowl party, try Plaka Souvlaki. Known for its classic Greek-style food, the spot serves up classic Mediterranean flavors wrapped up in a delicious warm pita. We love the skewers, sliders, and dips for the perfect party spread combination. The food here is also excellent for takeout and travels well. A bonus from Plaka’s catering menu: you can order sternos (small flames that keep catering trays warm), wire racks, plates, and utensils to make things even easier on you as the host.

Football-Shaped Oreo Cookies Platter from Alessio’s | 539 Park Avenue, Hoboken + 99 Franklin Street, Jersey City

Alessio's Football Oreos

For Super Bowl LVIII, Alessio’s has an entire menu of Super Bowl 2024 specials — including a platter of football-shaped Oreo cookies. Orders must be placed ahead of time — email info@alessioshoboken.com or call the restaurant at 201-659-5200 to order. Other options on the Super Bowl menu include chicken wings, meatball parm sliders, Alessio’s antipasto tray/charcuterie board, and various types of pizza, among other dishes.

If you’re heading to an Italian-style Superbowl party, or just want to bring the goods Second Street Bakery has what you’re looking for. Snag a couple of mini pizzas, stuffed rolls, or platters and you’ll be good to go — but don’t forget the cinnamon rolls for dessert, you won’t be disappointed.

It’s no coincidence that the Super Bowl happens to fall on a Sunday and when you live in a notably Italian city, you have to go for the sauce. Our go-to pick for Super Bowl Sunday is always a smorgasbord of our favorite meals throughout the Mile Square. First up, pizza and meatball parm sandwiches from Hot House Pizza. The cheese-to-sauce ratio is epic and our go-to meal when we have guests. The next stop is Losurdo’s for fresh mozzarella and prosciutto sandwiches — but don’t sleep on the Fig + Pig sandwich. It’s a hidden gem, for sure. Then we move onto Cafe Michelina where we grab a few pounds of fresh mozzarella and freshly filled cannoli — IYKYK. This may seem like a lot but when you’re feeding a small army of friends, it’s a ‘go-to’ combo for a Super Bowl Sunday Sauce done right.
