There’s a new sound on Pier A. Cue the pump-up music and motivation because a popular fitness club is taking over. Prime Cycle, has relocated outdoor classes to a new spot with a prime view. Pier A’s iconic green gazebo, located at 100 Sinatra Drive just north of the Hoboken Train Station, is now home to Prime Cycle’s waterfront outdoor classes during the pandemic. Read on for more about how and why this super cycle company has changed locations.

Hoboken has been taking steps to support local businesses in the uncertain times of COVID-19. Back in May 2020 {which doesn’t feel like almost a year ago already}, Mayor Bhalla signed an executive order allowing fitness clubs to use outdoor spaces including city parks and fields.

“Our gyms and fitness clubs have been hard hit during COVID-19,” Mayor Bhalla said in the original executive order. “Allocating space for outdoor classes provides an added option for safe and socially distanced workouts that makes the best possible use of our public space.”

Before taking over the pavilion at the end of Pier A, Prime Cycle was previously holding classes at Maria Pepe Batting Cages under this same executive order. The fitness group even worked with the city to set up free classes for middle school and high school girls, calling the first two classes a “huge success” via Instagram.

Each month the co-owner of Prime Cycle, Julia Insogna-Jarret, works with the city to renew her month-to-month lease for an outdoor space. Since the flagship location isn’t geared for social distancing, Julia has been using city-provided outdoor spaces to bring riders the cycle classes they know and love.

Julia and Prime Cycle posted a statement to riders and customers saying in part, “I am extremely grateful for the time we have been given to hold classes at the [Maria Pepe Batting Cages], and while of course disappointed that we cannot remain there until we can return indoors…the city has agreed to let Prime Cycle move to the gazebo on Pier A.”

This latest space allows riders to get a great work out all while taking in the amazing skyline of Manhattan. You don’t need to worry about people watching you get your sweat on, because the pavilion is covered on all sides, except for directly in front of the water so everyone taking the class can also take in the views {don’t worry, not many people are walking around to look in}.

While this location is only temporary for Prime Cycle, the fitness brand is definitely looking to make the most of the situation, celebrating riding anniversaries of frequent riders, as well as holding sunset classes. If you venture out to take a class with Prime Cycle, make sure to bring your own towel and water bottle {but don’t worry, you can rent shoes on-site}.
