Pregnancy beauty and beauty treatments, however, are a bit of a rocky subject — with all of the information out there, it’s hard to find what is acceptable for pregnant women to use as part of their skincare regimen. Sure, Google has become a go-to resource for nearly everything but in the age of information, some of that can be misrepresented.
Alas, we’re here to turn the tide. We sat down to chat with local beauty ambassadors — owners of medspas, boutiques, salons, and spas — to uncover some spots in the area that cater to and sell products that are pregnancy-safe.

Attain Medspa {720 Monroe Street, Suite E407}
While there are many precautions to take during pregnancy, Attain Medspa is taking all of the necessary measures to ensure safe and effective treatments for all who visit. While opening Attain, owner Lauren Ben Meir was pregnant and swears by the dermaplaning and Jet Peel combination. She curated a selection of treatments for herself and other expecting women who needed help maintaining their skin. “Many women find themselves dealing with hormonal acne, melasma, and even increased hair production,” explained Lauren. The Jet Peel Machine is perfect for gentle, yet strong exfoliation using only detox water and vitamin c infusion. The dermaplaning also helps to remove peach fuzz, dead skin, build up, and other debris, leaving you with a perfect glow.

This organic grocery and specialty store is filled with heaps of products that are safe for both mom and baby. With well-known brands like Earth Mama and Burt’s Bees and products ranging from belly balms to skincare, to prenatal vitamins, Organic Basic Foods is fully stocked with everything an expectant mother needs. We specifically love the Nordic Naturals line of prenatal vitamins because they are easy in the stomach and contain all of the essential vitamins necessary for mama to be healthy. The store even carries a full line of Earth Mama products including belly butter, teas for every trimester, and mineral sunscreens. More than that, the staff is extremely knowledgeable and can help to find any product tailored to your specific needs.
EC Beauty Studio {80 River Street}
Erica, owner of EC Beauty Studio has always made it her mission to carefully serve everyone who walks through her doors. This beauty sanctuary is fit to care for even the most delicate skin. Erica recommends either the vegan facial or oxygen facial to care for that precious, pregnant skin. The oxygen facial is specially formulated to regenerate and rejuvenate the skin while removing impurities. Vitamins and oxygen are sprayed onto the skin post exfoliation, giving that glowy look.
The vegan facials {anti-aging and cold therapy} are both wonderful ways to cleanse the skin using gentle, yet effective products to brighten skin, reduce wrinkles, and decrease irritation and inflammation. The studio also has pregnancy-safe + comfortable beds, fit to adapt to women at any stage in their pregnancy. Erica goes above and beyond to ensure the safety, comfort, and efficacy of receiving treatments at her spa and it truly shows in all that she and her crew do.

Set to open in the fall, The Hive’s coffee and retail shop will have a wide range of pregnancy-safe skincare available. Available will be quite a few lines, perfect for skincare during pregnancy, such as Bambini Futuna, Soapwalla, Willow by the Sea, and Flora Lee Naturals, though they plan to carry many more. Looking for a great, natural belly balm? Willow by the Sea has you covered. Soapwalla has everything from cleansers to deodorants that are pregnancy-safe, too. Bambini Furtuna has mostly baby products, perfect to nourish your little one, and Flora Lee Naturals are a plant-derived skincare company that will help support changing skin. Owner Marietta Reynolds is not only a skin expert but also the mama of four beautiful children. So, she really knows how to care for skin during this beautiful time in life. The most important thing Marietta emphasizes is sun protection. Trust us when we say we totally understand how hard it is to find a safe sunscreen to use while expecting. Broad-spectrum sunscreens that protect against UVA and UVB rays are best. Be sure to look for mineral or physical sunscreens, which do not penetrate the skin, rather lay on top. Sunscreen is vitally important during pregnancy as the skin is more sensitive and prone to different types of hyperpigmentations. Downtown Medspa carries Environ and Skin Better Sunscreen, which are both effective and safe forms of sunscreen that will not penetrate the skin, and are available for purchase at Downtown Medspa.
Gaia’s Cavern {140 Wayne Street}
This Jersey City nook uses EEminence, an exclusive, result-driven, organic skincare line. The products are completely customizable and tailored to different facial needs. The spa uses spices from Hungary, such as paprika, which brings out heat in the skin and encourages blood flow. Each potent treatment comes in its purest form and users will have to do their own dilution using water to create the mixture. The wonderful thing about Gaia’s is that its mission involves coaching others how to take care of skin at home. The spa also offers prenatal and postnatal massages with two massage therapists who specialize in such practices. Each massage is tailored to fit the needs of the mother to be and could include treatments to reduce swelling and pain while increasing relaxation. Also available are homemade body scrubs, oils, hair products, deodorants, and more. Visits are appointed only in order to keep everyone safe.
Paloma Salon {373 3rd Street}
This salon not only specializes in hair care, color, and cuts but also sells a selection of skincare items, perfect for moms. Owners Gisella Amaya and Ken Hughes suggest picking up something from the Moonbath collection. Unwinding {safely} in a warm bath with one of the bath teas is the perfect way to decompress and soothe the mind and body. Meant to steepen in a French press for 20 minutes prior to pouring into the bath, these teas are geared towards promoting healthy skin, healing, and relaxation. We suggest picking up New Moon for relaxation and soothing comfort or Woman Tea for empowerment, strength, and unity. Gisella encourages women to use The Full Moon bath tea postpartum as it is a bit more energizing and intended for releasing and detoxifying. The salon also offers pregnancy safe hair products that can be purchased in house.

Pholk Beauty Lab {203 Monticello Avenue}

We are loving this black-owned business for so many reasons — one of them being its brilliantly talented and strong female owner, Niambi Cacchioli. Her beautiful selection of pregnancy-safe products has blessed the beauty industry with safe and effective plant-based products. Niambi recommends the Beauty Sleep Set, which includes the Honeysuckle Rose Face Mist {for hydration and relaxation}, the H2Oil Night Treatment {for hydration and combating hyperpigmentation, and the Werkacita Beauty Balm, which could be used all over the face, body, and lips.
