Back-to-School 2024: Local Teachers Share Their Classroom Wishlists

As we hit the midpoint of August in Hudson County, the back-to-school season is just around the corner. Teachers are diving into preparations for the 2024-2025 school year, setting up their classrooms, updating lesson plans, and getting excited to welcome their new students. This also means that new school supplies will be needed to start the school year off on the right foot. From pencils and books to notebooks and more, school supply shopping can come at a great expense. To lend a helping hand to our local educators, we have compiled a list of local New Jersey teachers and their wish lists for this upcoming school year. Read on to find out how to help these educators and their back-to-school wish lists for the 2024-2025 school year.

Lexi — 1st Grade

This is Lexi’s third year of teaching and her second year at this school.

Madison is beginning her second year as a kindergarten teacher and has been living in downtown Hoboken for a little over a year.

Tiffany Kane — Instructional Coach Grades 6-8

Tiffany works in a middle school in Jersey City that has received minimal support. Her role involves coaching and guiding teachers, as well as providing students with essential resources. With over 70% of students on free or reduced lunch, many of her efforts focus on using incentives to boost behavior, attendance, and academic performance.

Carli — 6th Grade ELA

Carli is a 6th-grade ELA teacher and is starting her second year of teaching. She has already fallen in love with her role, finding joy in sharing her passion for reading and writing with her students and seeing their excitement when they connect with stories or express themselves through writing.

Emily has been at Elysian Charter School for six years. She welcomed a baby named Jackson in January and lives in Hoboken, where she and her family adore the community.

Kaitlyn  — 4th Grade

Kaitlyn is in her 11th year of teaching in NYC at a Title 1 school serving low-income, primarily immigrant families. She is passionate about making her classroom a welcoming space and a home away from home for her students, many of whom face difficult home situations.

Bianca Diaz — 4th Grade Bilingual Homeroom

Bianca is a 6th-year 4th-grade teacher in a bilingual classroom where all her students are new to the country, and many are experiencing an American school for the first time. The Bilingual program helps them learn in their native language while transitioning to English, ensuring they don’t fall behind academically. Outside of school, Bianca loves discovering new restaurants with her husband and enjoys finding dog-friendly spots for their cavapoo, Winston.

Sophie is in her third year of teaching and her first year in fourth grade. Her passion for teaching drives her commitment to providing her students with everything they need to succeed.

Jessica has been a teacher for 14 years and is thrilled to be joining the Hoboken school district. She’s also a mom to a sweet 11-month-old baby boy named Julian.

Her wishlist features brain games to enhance problem-solving and collaboration, flexible seating and adaptive tools for student comfort, and essential classroom supplies. She and her 25 students are incredibly grateful for any support.

Daniella loves art and nature and embraces creative freedom in her classroom, letting kids make a mess as they explore their artistic side. After living in Hoboken for 10 years, she has found her true passion in teaching.

Milagros Huggins — Pre K

Milagros is excited to kick off the new school year and is asking for help to create the best environment for her students. She aims to build a welcoming space where students can grow and thrive.

Emily — High School Math

Emily is a high school math teacher dedicated to reducing math and testing anxiety by creating a welcoming environment and providing necessary supplies. Last year, 86% of her students felt that the proof unit of geometry exceeded their expectations. This year, she is moving to a new room and starting fresh with materials and decor.

Kaitlyn — Art Therapist

Kaitlyn is an art therapist working with multiple disabled teenagers and students with emotional and behavioral disorders. She also volunteers to run mental health and social justice groups for high schoolers. As a Hudson County native, she is committed to giving back to her community by using the arts to support and uplift the mental health of these students.

Katie is starting her 3rd year of teaching and is new to Hoboken and New Jersey this year. After teaching in Pennsylvania and working as a substitute, she’s excited to finally have her own classroom.

Sarami Soler — Kindergarten + 5th Grade Science

Sarami Soler has been an elementary school STEM teacher for nine years. They believe that teaching STEM to young students is an exhilarating experience that sparks curiosity and creativity in their young minds. Watching their eyes light up as they engage in hands-on experiments, solve problems, and explore the wonders of STEM is truly rewarding to Sarami.

Brenda is in her eighth year of teaching. She previously taught bilingual math and science but will teach all subjects this year, including Language Arts and Social Studies. As a former multilingual learner herself, she takes pride in advocating for her students.

Diane is in her 26th year of teaching at Elysian. This year, her sixth graders will explore biology and weather in science, while in math, they’ll cover all the standards with a focus on understanding the reasoning behind algorithms rather than just memorizing them.
