The Background

Monteleone’s has been in business since 1946 and is a third-generation family-owned bakery. Guido Monteleone first came to America from Sicily in 1909 and brought his family over to the states a few years later after the First World War. Guido opened Monteleone’s bakery in Jersey City with his family in 1946, which was passed down to his sons after he passed away in 1959. The grandchildren, Guido {the third}, Pete, and Mark Monteleone now run the whole operation.

The Goodies

Monteleone’s uses the same recipes that Guido Monteleone used when the bakery first opened, and they still use the same suppliers out of Brooklyn. Everything is made fresh, and from natural ingredients such as strawberry filling rather than strawberry preserves, and sometimes even fresh strawberries per customer request. Monteleone’s even makes their own cannoli shells.

When it comes to baked goods, there is nothing that Monteleone’s doesn’t have available. They sell cakes, cookies, pastries, brownies, cupcakes, pies, and more. In the mornings, stop by for a warm bagel and coffee while you order dessert for later. Assorted cookies and cannolis start at $9 a pound. Larger brownies and pastries are about $0.70 cents to one dollar each.

Monteleone’s is most known for their cakes for parties or special events. They bake about 50 birthday cakes on any given Saturday. A 10” square cake that feeds 20 people starts at $25 or $40 for an eggless cake. A small sheet cake for 25–30 people starts at $30 and $55 for eggless. A half sheet for 50–60 people starts at $50 and $75 for eggless. A full sheet cake that feeds 80–100 people starts at $90 or $120 for eggless. Cakes can be specially ordered over the phone or in person.
