Back in late June, we heard about Hoboken salon and barbershop Spesh closing its Washington Street storefront and converting to mobile-only — and now there will be a unique ice cream spot taking its place. Morelia Gourmet Paletas serves up paletas, a Mexican frozen dessert that comes in a variety of fun flavors. This new spot is taking over the former salon space located at 932 Washington Street — and as of Wednesday, September 6th, it’s officially open. Read on for more about Morelia Gourmet Paletas now open in the Mile Square.

The Details + About Morelia Paletas

Morelia Paletas is a veteran- and female-owned frozen treat shop that currently has locations in Florida, Texas, and North Carolina. The Washington Street storefront is its first New Jersey location. Earlier this summer, owners Letisia Campo and her husband told HG that signage would be going up this week and that the spot is looking to open up by mid-August. Now, as of September 6th, Morelia Paletas is officially open and servicing the Hoboken community.

As for the menu, this unique ice cream spot serves up paletas — a popular Mexican frozen treat. This dessert comes in three forms — creamy, fruity, or filled — and Morelia Paletas has a variety of each to choose from. The paletas are all handmade in small batches in Morelia Paletas’ Hollywood, Florida location, and are made from fresh fruits and rich creamy ingredients such as chocolate from Belgium, as well as pistachios from Sicily.

This unique ice cream experience is completely customizable, and the spot aims to make it a fun experience for customers. First, guests choose a flavor, then a dipping sauce (which comes from Italy) in which to submerge the paleta, and then the team will roll the paleta in a topping of the guest’s choice.

There are over 15 paleta options, four different dipping choices, and numerous toppings to choose from. Creamy flavors include cookies and cream with Oreos, strawberry cheesecake, and Greek yogurt with berries. Fruit-flavored options include strawberry, lime, mango, and passion fruit. The filled paletas options include banana filled with Nutella, dulce de leche filled with dulce de leche from Argentina, and passion fruit filled with condensed milk.

“A very popular option is our s’mores topping where we roast marshmallow fluff over the paleta and dust it with Graham crackers. We can even wrap a paleta in a warm freshly made waffle for that extra crispiness,” the owners told HG.

If customers are looking for ice cream in shake form, there’s also the option to pick two flavors of paletas to blend with a choice of water or milk to make a milkshake or fruit smoothie.

Morelia Paletas also has sugar-free, gluten-free, Kosher, and creamy vegan options. The coconut paleta, nocciola hazelnut, and chocolate hazelnut cookies and cream paletas are all vegan. In addition, the spot will also be serving up mini pup-sicles for our furry friends.
