The Closure

A reader DM’d The Hoboken Girl on Sunday, September 28th, saying that they were at Kitchen Step and it was closed. “It looks like it closed, but very quietly,” the DM read. Team HG reached out to Kitchen Step to find out more. The closure was confirmed on Monday, September 29th. A spokesperson for the restaurant told HG that the business was unable to renegotiate its lease with the property owner. “We hope to re-open down the road if we can find the space,” the spokesperson said. As for the location at EWR Terminal A, that is not going anywhere.

The Station Hoboken

The Kitchen Step opened in 2016 in Jersey City’s Van Vorst Park neighborhood. The name took its inspiration from the neighborhood’s history: it is a nod to Cornelius Van Vorst, one of Jersey City’s earliest civic leaders. Known as “Courtly Cornelius”, his marble kitchen step originated from a statue of King Edward III taken down in revolt by patriotic Americans. The stoop came to be known as “the cornerstone of liberty.”

The Kitchen Step became as much a gathering place as Courtly Cornelius’ step, however, many more people were welcomed over the modern kitchen step than the original one. Cornlieus placed the step at his garden gate, where it became somewhat of a beacon for people trying to gain entrance to his home, many of whom were denied.

The Kitchen Step became a staple for Jersey City residents and guests, with its seasonal menu changes, incredible wine list, and quirky interiors. Chef Ryan DePersio is also the Chef at Battello, another local favorite.
