The day has finally come, Hoboken! Jersey Mike’s is officially open in the Mile Square as of August 7th.

Jersey Mike’s self-describes itself as an authentic sub sandwich franchise that’s been serving subs at over 2,000 locations nationwide since 1956. Located at 202 Hudson Street, Jersey Mike’s is taking over the former Fran’s Italian Delicatessen location, which closed suddenly over a year ago.

Changes at the former site of Fran’s happened pretty quickly. On June 30th of 2018, the deli abruptly closed its doors and by July 14th, Hoboken Girl reported that signage for Jersey Mike’s had already gone up on the site’s storefront. Now, a little less than a month later, Jersey Mike’s is ready to start serving the Mile Square.

A Delicious Blend

Wondering which ingredients are responsible for that delicious Jersey Mike’s signature flavor? According to their website, their subs are made with something called “The Juice.” Their website reads, “The Juice adds that certain something extra… It’s how a Jersey Mike’s sub gets its exquisite zing.”

So, what is it? A blend of red wine vinegar and olive oil is who’s to thank. It adds a signature kick to each sub and keeps sub-lovers coming back for more.

Local Produce

Jersey Mike’s prides itself on using locally-grown, packaged, and shipped produce. With a name like Jersey Mike’s — it seems safe to say this franchise started out local, which means you’ll be getting the freshest of locally-grown and sourced ingredients.

Fresh Bread Baked Daily

Delicious bread is arguably one of the most important parts of a sub sandwich. According to Jersey Mike’s website, they make their bread fresh in-house daily. Jersey Mike’s has both traditional white, whole wheat, rosemary parm, and gluten-free bread.

“It’s the only way to have a truly authentic Jersey Mike’s sub,” their website says.

What to Expect From the Menu

Hoboken Girl was actually lucky enough to get our hands on a menu and the options are as savory as they sound.

Freshly sliced and ready to order options are Jersey Mike’s American Classics like ham + provolone, roast beef + provolone, and turkey + provolone. In need of an Italian favorite? There’s The Super Sub, The Original Italian, and Jersey Shore’s Favorite — provolone, ham, and cappacuolo.

Also on the menu is a Tuna Fish sandwich, a plant-based option for vegetarians called The Veggie, and two club subs: the Club Sub and Club Supreme.

There’s a whole other side of the menu dedicated to chicken cheesesteaks and cheesesteaks. With five different chicken cheesesteak options — from chicken bacon ranch to buffalo chicken {featuring Frank’s Red Hot Sauce} — and three different regular cheesesteaks — Mike’s Famous Philly, Chipotle, and The Big Kahuna. And for tinier tummies, there’s a mini kids’ menu.

Other New Deli Additions

At the time of the sudden closure, the owners of Fran’s put a sign in the storefront window that read: “To Our Loyal Customers, Thank you for your patronage over the years. Stay Tuned for Something New and Exciting. All the Best . . . Love Fran’s Deli & Staff.”

Though the Mile Square was forced to say goodbye to Fran’s, there is no shortage of delis ’round town. In fact, Jersey Mike’s isn’t even the only deli to recently plant roots in Hoboken. A kosher-style deli called The Pastrami House recently announced that it too plans to bring Hoboken some pastrami-on-rye goodness.

The Pastrami House hasn’t offered up an official “open” date yet, but we do know that the Lincroft, New Jersey-based delicatessen is coming to 832 Washington Street — the former Boardwalk Fresh Burgers and Fries spot.

And that hardly scratches the surface of Hoboken’s deli repertoire. These two new sub spots join a host of other fan-favorite local delis: Luca Brasi’s, Losurdo Brothers Italian Deli, Rosticceria Da Gigi, Fiore’s, Vito’s + Son, and more.
