Expect Major Traffic + Limited Vehicle Access Into Hoboken

Hoboken’s Office of Emergency Management has issued a gridlock advisory for July 4th, as major traffic congestion is expected throughout the day and evening, especially late at night after the fireworks. The Hoboken Police Department’s Traffic and Transportation Unit will implement a Limited Travel Access Plan to help keep vehicles moving and make sure emergency responders can get where they need to go. For anyone planning to drive in or out of Hoboken before or after the fireworks, prepare for major delays.

To help with public safety and emergency access, traffic restrictions may begin as early as 8AM on July 4th. Access into Hoboken from all gateways into the city will be limited.

Hoboken Police officers will be stationed at entry points, and access will be limited to:

  • Residents
  • People with proof of prepaid reserved parking in garages
  • Business owners
  • People traveling to work within Hoboken
  • Emergency personnel
  • Transit vehicles
  • Other authorized vehicles

Unauthorized vehicles will be turned away. Visitors are strongly encouraged to skip driving and use public transportation instead, including PATH, NJ Transit rail, ferries, and the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail. Walking or biking is also encouraged whenever possible.

Reserved Parking at Municipal Garages

Pre-paid reserved parking will be required on July 4th for all non-monthly customers at the following municipal garages:

  • Garage B, located at 28 Second Street
  • Garage D, located at 215 Hudson Street
  • Midtown Garage, located at 371 Fourth Street

An all-day event rate of $55, not including transaction fees, will apply at these three garages. Reserved parking sales will close on Thursday, July 2nd at 11:59PM, or earlier if spaces sell out. Drivers should also know that leaving any garage, municipal or private, may take a long time after the fireworks display ends.

On-Street Parking Restrictions

Temporary no parking signs will be posted in different areas around Hoboken to preserve emergency access lanes. Vehicles parked in temporary no-parking zones or emergency access areas will be towed at the owner’s expense. The City is also warning that there will be zero tolerance for drivers blocking emergency routes or travel lanes. Temporary no-parking signs will be posted at least 72 hours before restrictions go into effect, so residents and visitors should keep an eye out and follow all posted signage.
