Hoboken Shares Parking Updates for 2024 Holiday Season

Mayor Bhalla Releases Statement About Recent Public Safety Concerns in Hoboken

An unhoused man attacked two individuals at Church Square Park in Hoboken on October 31st, leading to the hospitalization of the victims. Due to this incident, Hoboken residents have developed concerns regarding public safety, police patrol, and the homelessness crisis in Hoboken. Mayor Bhalla has shared his thoughts surrounding this issue, provided updates on this incident, and discussed the City’s plans to address concerns raised by residents via a statement. Bonchon, a Korean fried chicken chain, has opened its first Hudson County takeout location in Union City. Per Patch Hoboken, this location doesn’t allow indoor dining but is open for takeout and delivery in the area. It’s located at 2100 Kerrigan Avenue. Crispy wings and drumsticks are tossed with signature sauces of soy garlic, spicy, and Korean BBQ. The menu features sides like Korean donuts, bulgogi fries, and kimchi. The Union City location is the first remote location and one of nine open in the area.


Toll Hikes At GWB, Lincoln Tunnel Proposed in Port Authority Budget

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has released its latest proposed budget, which includes toll hikes at the agency’s bridges and tunnels and paves the way for several big improvement projects. Per Patch, on November 14th, the Port Authority released its proposed 2025 spending plan, which comes to $9.4 billion, up slightly from last year’s budget. The proposed toll and fare hikes would help to pay for the “largest Port Authority capital investment in history,” in addition to offsetting massive losses seen during the coronavirus pandemic.

The Hoboken Shelter is hosting its 21st Annual December Auction on December 11th. This year, the event will feature a virtual auction that runs throughout the day on the Auction’s website. In the evening, the live auction and cocktail party will take place at BIRCH, located at 92 River Street in Hoboken. Tickets for the live auction and cocktail party can be purchased online here and at the door of BIRCH on the evening of the event. Tickets are $50 per person in advance and $60 at the door. For those interested in sponsoring The Annual December Auction, tickets are also included with all five sponsorship levels.


Jersey City Documentary Man on a Mission Debuts at Finland Film Festival

A Jersey City documentary, Man on a Mission, which highlights the transformative power of the arts in community building, made its European debut on November 24th at the Helsinki Education Film Festival International in Finland. Per the Jersey City Times, the 40-minute documentary highlights the life of Carmine Tabone, a Jersey City artist and educator who dedicated nearly 50 years to community work through the Educational Arts Team and Camp Liberty. Carmine’s career centered on using the arts to foster community and inspire young people.


Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Opens New DNA Laboratory

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office has officially opened a brand new DNA Laboratory at its Meadowview Campus in Secaucus. Per NJ.com, the DNA lab is the third item on the expansion checklist Prosecutor Esther Suarez created when the new facility was being built, along with a child advocacy center and a cybercrime unit. This new DNA lab will shave weeks, maybe even months, off criminal investigations.


Hudson County Executive Guy Announces Affordable Housing Task Force

Hudson County Executive Craig Guy announced on November 14th the formation of the County’s first-ever Affordable Housing Task Force. Per a County of Hudson press release, the Task Force will provide policy recommendations that will assist the County and municipalities in expanding affordable housing ideas and opportunities. Guy appointed Task Force Chairman Bill Matsikoudis to assist in expanding affordable housing in Hudson County.


What’s Going on With the Uptown Farmers’ Market in Hoboken?

With all the fresh produce and goods the Uptown Farmers’ Market provides, it has become a beloved gem of the Hoboken community. The market, which occurs on Saturdays from 9AM to 1PM during the spring and fall months, is currently located under the 14th Street Viaduct. Recently, Hoboken residents have expressed concerns regarding the future of this market at its 14th Street location. Some were worried that the Uptown Farmers’ Market would be forced to move for the 2025 season due to the installation of pickleball courts, but the County has since said that it is finding a way to have both activities in the same location. Jersey City Council OKs Special Improvement District to Fund Pompidou on First Reading

In June 2021, Jersey City leaders announced plans to open an outpost of the internationally renowned French art museum, The Pompidou. At the time, the museum was set to open in 2024. Now 2024 is drawing to a close and the plans are being revived for a second attempt. Millions of dollars in tax cuts and City bonds are involved in the project, which has drawn criticism from throughout New Jersey. On Thursday, November 14th, the Jersey City Council considered the first reading of a new special improvement district (SID) to help fund the project. The council voted 6-3 to introduce the SID. A final vote will likely take place on December 11th or later, but more details about the SID need to be worked out before that vote can happen. Click here for more.

The Hoboken Christmas tree lighting will take place on Wednesday, December 11th, the annual Hoboken holiday market will take place on Saturday, December 7th, and the Hoboken menorah lighting will take place on Sunday, December 29th in partnership with Chabad of Hoboken + Jersey City. Holocaust Survivor + Author Marion Blumenthal Lazan Visits Hoboken Middle School

Man Charged in NYC Triple Homicide Had Prior Arrests in Hoboken + Union City

The man accused of killing three people in Manhattan at random on November 18th had been arrested twice in Hudson County earlier this year, once in Hoboken and once in Union City. Per Patch Hoboken, Ramon Rodriguez-Rivera, 51, was charged in connection with the fatal stabbings of three people in two hours, a 36-year-old construction worker at his 19th Street worksite, a 67-year-old man who was fishing in the East River, and a 36-year-old woman on East 42nd Street. An indictment says that on January 11th of this year, Ramon entered the Green Room, a CBD store on 14th Street in Hoboken, and stole more than $500 worth of Mason jars containing CBD buds and other products. Also, on January 15th, he allegedly stole more than $500 in items from Hi Wireless on Bergenline Avenue in Union City.

Celebrity Chef David Burke is partnering with The Salvation Army NJ to fight hunger this holiday season. The Salvation Army NJ shared via Instagram that from November 21st-27th, a percentage of proceeds from two of David Burke’s signature desserts when purchased at selected New Jersey David Burke restaurants/locations will be donated to The Salvation Army NJ Division.


New $9 Congestion Pricing Fee to Drive into Lower Manhattan Approved

On Monday, November 18th, 2024 the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s board voted to officially implement a $9 congestion pricing fee for all non-commercial vehicles to enter Manhattan south of 60th Street starting on January 5th, 2025 after the plan was indefinitely halted this summer, per NJ.com. New York Governor Kathy Hochul claims that the toll would be enough to raise $15 billion for the MTA as thousands of commuters begin to opt for a public transit commute instead of driving to avoid additional fees. Included in the plan is an immediate increase to a number of outer-borough bus routes, as well as discounts after 9PM. Drivers who earn less than $50,000 per year will also receive a 50 percent discount on every toll after the 10th toll each month. Click here for more.


New Jersey Turnpike Toll Increases to Begin in January 2025

In addition to the new $9 congestion pricing fee, NJ Turnpike Authority officials will also be rolling out another 3% toll increase starting on January 1st, 2025. The increase will affect drivers on both the New Jersey Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway. The New Jersey Turnpike increase will equate to an additional 16 cents per day — which for most commuters, could be close to an additional $80 expense every year. The Garden State Parkway tolls across its various locations will also increase by 3%. Future increases can also be expected as the state’s process called “indexing” which allows tolls to automatically increase each year. Click here for more.


City of Hoboken Expands Garage B Digital Payment Options with ParkMobile

The City of Hoboken announced on November 20th that it is making parking more convenient by allowing parkers at municipal Garage B to pay directly from their phones using the ParkMobile app. Per a City of Hoboken press release, this new digital offering provides drivers with an alternative to traditional payment kiosks, giving residents and visitors an easier and faster way to manage their parking. Drivers can use the ParkMobile app by setting up a new account or logging into their existing account used for on-street metered parking in Hoboken.

Jersey City Elementary School, P.S. 16 is Named in Top 10 in New Jersey

U.S. News and World Report recently released their 2025 ranking of the nation’s best public elementary schools and one Hudson County public school came out on top. Per Patch Jersey City, Cornelia F. Bradford School, located in the Exchange Place area, came out in the top 10. The news magazine used publicly available data from the U.S. Department of Education in its metrics.


Updates on Essex-Hudson Greenway Including Mass Transit Plans

Some new details about a highly anticipated “greenway” that will connect eight municipalities in North Jersey were recently unveiled, including a plan to add mass transit to the mix. There are also plans to partner with NJ Transit to extend the Secaucus Meadowlands Transitway along a portion of the Greenway. SWAT Team Arrests Suspect in Hoboken Assault

A SWAT team was called to handle a suspect in an assault in Hoboken who barricaded himself in an apartment on November 20th. Per Patch Hoboken, a man allegedly assaulted someone near Third and Adams streets, causing minor injuries to the victim. After the assault took place the suspect barricaded himself in an apartment on the 200 block of Adams Street. Police closed the block to traffic while other law enforcement agencies, including the Hudson County Regional SWAT Team, came to help. The man was arrested just before 3:30PM.

Public School Teacher and Hoboken Resident to Open New Hoboken Daycare + Learning Center

Greatness Grows is a new early learning center in Hoboken set to open in January 2025. The daycare center is owned by Gianna Peraza, a public school teacher and local resident, and will serve children ages 0-5. Enrollment for 2025 is now open and can be accessed here.

NY Waterway to Move Forward with Renewable Diesel Energy Source

New York Waterway has completed its renewable diesel trial and is now moving forward with this new, cleaner energy source ahead of hybridizing its fleet next year. Per the Hudson County View, NY Waterway began its renewable diesel trial this past July on selected ferries and is currently on track to use 375,000 gallons over the next year, roughly 20 percent of the fleet’s fuel consumption, with a goal to increase to 50 percent usage in the near future. This initiative complements a fleet-wide hybrid/electrification program that will begin the conversion of NY Waterway ferries in the middle of 2025.

Two weeks after her death, the Hoboken City Council honored late President Jen Giattino by placing her photo at the dais during the meeting on November 18th. Per Patch Hoboken, after a blessing from Monsignor Michael Andreano at the meeting, council members shared their thoughts about Jen.


Jersey City Officials Raid Illegal Breeding Facility and Seize Dogs + Reptiles

Authorities seized at least a dozen animals, including a large Colombian boa constrictor and a Savannah monitor lizard, during the raid of a Jersey City home on November 20th. Officials described the property as an illegal breeding facility. Per NJ.com, Jersey City spokeswoman Kimberly Wallace-Scalcione said approximately seven dogs and five reptiles were removed from 146 Clendenny Avenue. Two men, ages 34 and 39, received summonses, as well as several state and local ordinance violations. The animals are currently being examined and triaged at the City’s animal shelter.

Panaderya Salvaje, a bakery inspired by flavors of the Philippines, is opening soon in Downtown Jersey City at 9 Erie Street. The bakery announced via Instagram on November 10th. Panaderya Salvaje is known for its laminated pastries and incorporating flavors from the southern Philippines with ingredients like coconut, ube (purple yam), and calamansi (citrus fruit).


Hoboken Officials Attend Groundbreaking for Apartment Building at Former Hertz Car Rental

A seven-story “boutique” apartment building will rise on the former site of Hertz car rental near Hoboken’s northern border. Per Patch Hoboken, Hoboken officials and developers from Advance Realty Investors attended a ceremonial groundbreaking last week to begin work on the building at 1404 Willow Avenue.


City of Hoboken Hosting Palestinian Flag Raising at City Hall on 11/25

Per an announcement from the City of Hoboken, the Palestinian flag will be raised inside Hoboken City Hall, located at 94 Washington Street, on Monday, November 25th at 12PM.
