Gold Roast Coffee Hoboken: An Australian-Inspired Cafe

Written by:

For West Hoboken, coffee is slowly becoming the thing to anchor the area retail-wise. There’s Black Rail on Jackson Street, Maroon on Jefferson, Jefferson’s Coffee on Madison, and more recently — Gold Roast Coffee on Harrison Street. Located at 600 Harrison Street, Gold Roast Coffee is an Aussie-inspired cafe complete with sandwiches, treats {milkshakes!}, and —you guessed it— coffee. Here’s more about this Hoboken coffee shop, easily accessible from the 9th Street or 2nd Street Light Rail in Hoboken:

Opened in 2017 by Australian-born Hoboken resident Henry Cowan, Gold Roast Coffee serves quality Hidden Grounds coffee and a variety of sandwiches {+ Amy’s Breads treats, #yumz}. Among the menu items are a variety of Australian-inspired dishes: Brekky Sandwich, Aussie Meat Pie, Steak Mince and Cheese Pie, and more. Smashed avocado and eggs is a go-to {because Australia actually started avocado toast}. Hint: Try the cheese board {and FYI, it’s BYOB in case you want to bring some vino to enjoy}.

The space is bright and airy with windows all around, great music playing, and there’s a ramp for wheelchairs and strollers to access the cafe easily. WiFi is free, and there’s space to work {albeit, not a ton but decently-sized}.

Henry decided to start Gold Roast Coffee in late 2017. “We have a passion and love for hospitality and have been involved in this industry for many years,” he shared. The owners have a diversified business background originating from Australia {if that wasn’t already obvious!}.

We wanted to bring our cafe-style aurora from Australia to Hoboken. A fun, family friendly and good vibe cafe serving quality foods, desserts and of course the best coffee. We want customers to know we are fully BYO you bring the champs we make the fresh juice,” Henry said, noting the casual and laid-back {yet fun!} environment.

Coffee-wise, everything you could want + more, including the unique go-to alternative milks like oat, almond, and macadamia.

Henry, one of the owners, shared with us that the most popular menu items are the Brekky Sandwich & Aussie Meat Pie, but they have a variety of different food options {including house-made desserts like the Gold Roast Brownie and not made in-house, but those having visited Australia will appreciate — Tim Tams!}. But the popularity of the Meat Pie is echoed by Henry. “Aussie Meat Pie is an absolute cracker of a meal,” he excitedly shared.

Henry continued, “We would like to thank all our customers for their support throughout the entire year. We can’t wait to continue serving up new and exciting meals alongside our rocking coffee. Your support of local businesses is what it’s all about!”
