The Story Behind ‘Backstage,’ a Cocktail Lounge in Hoboken with Musical Roots

“Meet Me Backstage,” is something we’ve always wanted to tell someone and a neon yellow sign that lights up the 11th Street entrance to a sleek cocktail lounge in uptown Hoboken. Backstage, located in the back area of the upscale, coastal-themed restaurant Sirenetta Seafood + Raw Bar, serves up some major speakeasy vibes because of the mystery behind this dim-lit space. Gabi Lombardi, the owner of Sirenetta, Sorellina Italian Kitchen and Wine Bar, and Backstage, gave The Hoboken Girl the exclusive on what to expect from the contemporary locale. Read on below for more about the concept, menu, and how Gabi is paying tribute to Maxwell’s, which used to host concerts where Backstage now stands.

The Concept

The space behind Sirenetta was created to be a neighborhood stop for romantic drinks, a nightcap with friends, or a unique place to celebrate a special occasion with an intimate feel.

Gabi tells us, “In designing and conceptualizing the space, I wanted to acknowledge the famous Maxwell’s that it used to be, but also give it a fresh new feel as we have done in the front with Sirenetta. It was important to me to have each bar with its own identity, including Sorellina, Sirenetta, and Backstage. So while Sirenetta is more of a contemporary bright and open space, Backstage has a more edgy vibe to it with concrete floors, unfinished brick walls, luxurious velvet seating, and a black marble bar.”

To pay homage to the many iconic bands that have played there, Backstage kept the stage and extended it for lounge seating. “On the back wall the team created a custom wallpaper using photos of the bands that were left behind, including Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Weezer, Goo Goo Dolls, and others,” Gabi said.

The Menu + Private Events

The beverage list features seasonally crafted cocktails, an extensive list of higher-end spirits, and fine Italian wine and champagne. The cocktails are all named after songs of the bands who have played on stage over the years. Guests can also enjoy seafood from the raw bar menu from Sirenetta and house desserts. The selection includes a variety of oysters, clams, and more.

Backstage can also be rented out for private events including cocktail parties with a private bar, lounge seating, and high-top tables. Event menus can include an open bar, passed hors d’oeuvres, and stations of raw bar, antipasti, pasta, or dessert. The space accommodates up to 40 guests for private events.

Gabi, who is also a certified sommelier, is excited to share that starting in January, Backstage will also host various events including cocktail making classes, food pairings, and wine and spirits tastings.
