Over the past week, the internet has been awash with photos of actor Timothée Chalamet dressed as prolific folk musician Bob Dylan. Fresh off the Dune: Part Two press tour, the actor is gearing up to star in a Bob Dylan biopic called A Complete Unknown. Per some savvy Jersey City locals, not everything is completely unknown — at least, not the movie’s filming locations. On Monday, March 25th, film crews for the upcoming movie were spotted at Miss America Diner in Jersey City. Read on for what we know about A Complete Unknown, Timothée Chalamet’s upcoming movie filming in Jersey City this week.

The Sighting

On Monday, March 25th, an eagle-eyed Hoboken Girl reader spotted what looked like a film crew at Jersey City’s Miss America Diner — an old-school spot serving classic NJ diner fare at 322 West Side Avenue. The reader shared that “there is no signage about the movie” on location, but a member of the on-site film crew confirmed that the project is A Complete Unknown, the upcoming Bob Dylan biopic starring Timothée Chalamet.

The reader tip checks out. Earlier this month, NJ.com reported that Timothée + his crew would embark on something of a Garden State tour, stopping in Passaic, Hudson, Essex, and Cape May counties to film A Complete Unknown. Filming was slated to start in late March and continue through May. Accordingly, the team is “duplicating Woodstock in New Jersey,” among other things.

The crew started filming in New York City earlier this month. Per People, Timothée was seen brooding outside of Hotel Chelsea on Sunday, March 24th, donning a “black button-up, green pants, a brown suede jacket and a pair of shades.” The week before, photos of the actor in a Newsies-style cap were inescapable: “he looks like he’s going to Camp Rock,” an X user said of the outfit.

As of our initial reporting on March 25th, there were no Timothée-Chalemet-dressed-as-Bob-Dylan sightings, or any other celeb sightings, in Hoboken or Jersey City. This, of course, changed rather quickly — Timmy was spotted at the Miss America Diner on the evenings of March 25th and 26th for a late-night shoot, per NJ.com. On Wednesday, March 26th, J Lo was spotted dining at Hoboken’s Elysian Cafe for an unrelated project (which you can read more about here). See a local-captured video of Timothée in Jersey City below.

About the Movie

A Complete Unknown was originally slated to begin filming last year, but production was halted due to the Screen Actors Guild strike, according to NJ.com. Per Deadline, the movie is set in “the influential New York music scene of the early ’60s” and follows “19-year-old Minnesota musician Bob Dylan’s meteoric rise as a folk singer to concert halls and the top of the charts.” The title refers to Bob Dylan’s hit “Like a Rolling Stone,” in which he sings: “How does it feel, how does it feel/To be without a home, like a complete unknown, like a rolling stone?”

Timothée Chalamet, who made recent headlines for his roles in Dune: Part II and Wonka, is portraying Bob Dylan. Following the purple valor suit of his Willy Wonka portrayal, Chalamet is billed for several musical performances in A Complete Unknown, according to NJ.com

Other cast members include Oscar-winner Edward Norton, Boyd Holbrook (The Bikeriders), Scoot McNairy (Argo), Dan Fogler (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them), Will Harrison (Daisy Jones & The Six) and Charlie Tahan (Ozark), per Deadline. Searchlight Pictures is producing the movie.
