Between the beginning of the World Cup and the championship win for the New York Knicks, New Jersey and New York are having sports fever. This upcoming week will involve several World Cup matches and the celebratory parade for the Knicks, meaning the area will be full of large-scale events with massive turnouts. This may affect local life, especially traffic for commuters, so HG has compiled what you need to know. Read on to learn about the World Cup and Knicks parades this upcoming week and how it may affect your commute.
World Cup Dates this Week
The World Cup, which has been hosted at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, will continue this week with a match on Tuesday, June 16th, between France and Senegal. It will take place at 3:00 PM. At least one New Jersey school district has already planned an early dismissal to mitigate the anticipated traffic crunch.
The World Cup has attracted many international fans to New Jersey, with an estimated 1.2 million visiting the Garden State for the event, according to the event’s official website. As a result, NJ Transit has altered public transit schedules, with its services around the East Rutherford area limited to World Cup ticket holders on game days. Riders are encouraged to avoid nonessential travel if you use its services, but if commuting is necessary, plan trips to avoid peak travel hours.

Tuesday will face the same restriction, so here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Access to trains from Penn Station New York (PSNY) and Secaucus Junction Station will be limited to ticket holders traveling to MetLife Stadium on Tuesday, June 16th, from 10:30 AM to 2:31 PM, according to NJ Transit’s website.
- Customers departing from New Jersey will be directed to the Hoboken PATH Station for travel to New York.
- Customers departing from New York will be directed to the 33rd Street PATH Station for travel to Hoboken or Newark Penn Station.
After the match concludes, eastbound trains traveling to New York Penn Station will terminate at Newark Penn Station or Newark Broad Street Station from 5:23 PM to 8:35 PM. Customers commuting to New York may use an NJ TRANSIT rail ticket or pass at no extra cost. Commuters may go to Newark Penn Station’s Northeast Corridor, North Jersey Coast Line, Raritan Valley Line, or PATH Station to reach New York as an alternative.
Commuters at Newark Broad Street Station who use the Morris + Essex Lines and Montclair-Boonton Line will have the following alternatives:
- Boarding a Hoboken-bound train to Hoboken Terminal for travel on the PATH train or NJ TRANSIT Bus No. 126 from Hoboken.
- Using an NJ TRANSIT rail ticket on the Newark Light Rail for travel to Newark Penn Station, where customers can transfer for PATH service to New York.

Details on the Knicks Championship Parade
Following the franchise’s historic NBA championship win, the New York Knicks will be hosting a celebratory parade on Thursday, June 18th. It will start at 10:00 AM near Battery Park and move north along Broadway until its conclusion at New York City Hall, where the Knicks team will be presented with keys to the city.
This event will lead to street closures along the southern tip of Manhattan, which will affect local commutes dependent on the area. It is also expected that traffic on New York-bound PATH trains, especially those departing from Exchange Place, will be heavier than usual. As a result, it is recommended to commute ahead of time to avoid peak hours surrounding the 10:00 AM parade, or to consider a 33rd Street-bound route that avoids the parade’s direct path.
