The Details

Sol Spirit has taken over the former Sattva Yoga space on Palisade Avenue. Upon announcing its closure, the founder of Sol, Jersey City resident Elizabeth Barrera, got in touch with the previous owner to transition the space into what it is today.

“With all the love and support from my friends and family, Sol Spirit Yoga & Wellness opened its doors on September 15th. None of it would have been possible without all the guidance, love, and light around me,” Elizabeth tells Hoboken Girl. “I and the other Sol Spirit teachers want to bring yoga and wellness back to the community of Jersey City Heights and the surrounding area, especially at a time like now where anxiety and depression are at an all-time high. More than anything, these practices are scientifically proven to help improve our physical, mental, and spiritual health.”

Current classes include Yoga for Anxiety, Vinyasa Sol Flow, Gentle Sol, Yin Yang, Meditation and Sound Bath, and Restorative Yoga Nidra. In addition, there are free Guided Meditations every Thursday at 12 PM.

Right now Sol Spirit offers an unlimited two-week trial for new members for $38. Regularly, a single class is $18, a three-class pass is $50, a 10 class pass is $140, and an unlimited monthly membership is $98. To book a class, visit Sol Spirit JC’s website found here.

Starting October 16, Sol Spirit will be doing bi-weekly Reiki Healing Circles, and even further down the road, the studio will be adding Itsy Bitsy Yoga and Kids’ Yoga. The Reiki Healing Circles class will cost $35 and private reiki sessions will cost $165 for 75 minutes and $185 for 90 minutes.

As defined on Sol Studio’s website:

“Reiki aims to help the flow of energy and removes blockages in a similar way to acupuncture or acupressure. During your session, different modalities will be used to arrive at the source of any fatigue, pain or discomfort that the client may be experiencing. Gentle hand placement will be used to navigate and balance your 7 main energy centers (chakras) to improve the flow of energy around the body which will enable relaxation, relieve pain, speed healing, and reduce other symptoms of illness.”

Background on the Owner

Elizabeth, who grew up in Hudson County, has been practicing yoga on and off for about six years. In the past two years, she began practicing more consistently “due to my high level of stress and anxiety, mixed with some depression periods,” she tells us.

“After a divorce 2 years ago, I moved to Jersey City so my 6-year-old daughter could be close to her father. I had worked for over 15 years in the fashion/beauty industry as an account executive, and the same year I got divorced (2019), I also lost my job. With all the changes in my life, my mental health started to spiral and I was prescribed medication to cope with my anxiety, depression, and insomnia. I needed a way out from the dark place I was in mentally — and feeling numb while medicated was not an option for me,” Elizabeth shares.

She continues, “Being present for my daughter was my priority, so I started seeking holistic ways to connect back to myself and find joy in life amidst all the chaos. I took the entire year of 2020 to heal and find my sense of purpose. I decided to fully dive back into yoga and meditation, where I felt at home. Through my yoga practice and the yoga community, I started to rebuild my self-esteem and confidence.”

In June 2020, Elizabeth became a certified yoga teacher and has been teaching and leading guided meditations since. Soon after, she received her Yin certification, a series of long-held floor poses, and her certification to be an ayurvedic nutritionist, an alternative medicine system with roots in India, and a reiki master teacher.
