The Backstory

Pastry Chef Melanie Durant, who earned a Best New Pastry Chef award in 2013 from Food + Wine, first launched Scram as a food truck in Charleston, South Carolina. Durant worked as the pastry chef for FIG, a beloved Lowcountry institution, before opening Scram in 2017.

Durant moved to Jersey City and opened Scram as a storefront a few years later. Unfortunately, since opening day was March 12th, 2020, Scram was only open in Jersey City for four days before closing due to the pandemic.

As everyone began to navigate the new normal, Durant and her team worked to transform Scram into a to-go pastry operation. About a month later, Scram reopened for pick-up orders and received a warm welcome from the neighborhood.

During a December 2021 visit to Scram, we waited outside in line for about half an hour to pick up our pastries — but it was well worth it. Scram has now fully reopened with indoor dining and the team has worked hard to earn its well-deserved reputation as one of the best bakeries in Jersey City.

The Vibe

Going to Scram feels like visiting a friendly neighbor — who happens to make really incredible pastries. It’s a cozy, welcoming spot with a few tables that fill up quickly. If you’re able to snag a spot, we recommend sitting for a while.
