Madison Pizza Lab – Hoboken’s newest pizzeria will be opening soon. Located at 152 Newark Street, Madison Pizza took over Verizza Pizza’s former spot. The owner of Madison Bar and Grill, Dave Carney,  took over the space a few months ago and is now ready to unveil his latest venture to locals.

Verizza opened just last fall in October 2020. In June 2021, less than 10 months after opening, the owners — three friends who shared a similar passion for pizza — announced they would be closing Verizza.

The statement read: “As of yesterday, VERIZZA has shut its doors for good. Although our time in Hoboken has been short, we’ve had a blast and would like to thank all of our customers for your fantastic support. Expect to see something new on 152 Newark Street in the near future. If you have any outstanding credit or gift cards, please contact us by email before June 15th. CIAO E GRAZIE!!”

In an Instagram post (note Verizza’s Instagram is now deactivated), the owners further explained that they “sold our operations to a different owner who will open a new concept over the summer.”

A few weeks later in June, Tap Into reported that Dave Carney, owner of The Madison Bar and Grill at 1316 Washington Street, would be taking over Verizza. He told the outlet, “I am going to do some decorating inside to make it warmer before reopening in September.”

About the Menu

Carney gave a sneak peek of what the menu will consist of when he announced he’d be taking over ownership. He told Tap Into, “My pies will be a cross between Neapolitan and Jersey-style—they’ll have that look but be crisp. I’m also going to do individual Sicilian pies—thick crust but super crisp.”

Carney continued, “Of course, I’ll be using all imported products including San Marzano tomatoes, and some Buffalo mozzarella. The sit-down menu will be tight—five or six appetizers, three entrees. We will cook everything in the Marra Forni pizza oven, and the focus will be on the pizza.”

Carney hinted at one specialty dessert that will be on the soon-to-launch menu. He said, “We will have a SMORE gelato, made only for us by a gelato maker in NYC.” The treat will feature “layered graham cracker, toasted marshmallow, and dark chocolate.”

Stay Tuned

While Madison Pizza gears up for its grand opening, the team has been sharing with the community what’s to come on the restaurant’s social media pages. On Instagram, the design of the cutting boards is revealed (see below), showing the name “Madison Pizza” engraved on it. The profile’s bio reads, “Your pizza may not always be the same, but you can rest assure it will always be good.”
