In January 2022, The Hoboken Girl learned that Nike had submitted an application through the City of Hoboken to do a complete remodel of 222 Washington Street. The Historic Preservation Commission confirmed to HG that the application was approved and that Nike would be taking over the space with a factory store. A full year later we can finally confirm — Nike by Hoboken has officially opened as of Thursday, January 26th. Nike Comes to Hudson County
Nike was cofounded by Phil Knight + Bill Bowerman in 1972 and has since become a household name in America — so most of us know what to expect from the clothes, shoes, and accessories store. We got the chance to chat with Nike and hear all about what makes the factory store in Hoboken a little different.
“The Nike Live retail concept is designed to deepen unbreakable Nike Member relationships with one-on-one connections, seamless digital services, and easy access to the local fitness community,” Tinashe Makotsi told The Hoboken Girl. “Nike Live stores offer a curated assortment of favorite sport performance apparel, footwear, and accessories so consumers can make sport a daily habit and live their life looking their best.”
The store will primarily focus on running, fitness, yoga, and women’s favorite fitness essentials like bras and leggings.
“We pride ourselves in connecting and partnering with the Hoboken community,” Tinashe mentioned. “Our team is composed of members that reside in Hoboken and its adjacent communities.”
In recent months Nike by Hoboken has hired part-time and full-time “athletes” from the local community to run the store. One team member previously worked at Nike by Upper East Side and will now take over the position of Head Coach here in Hoboken.
“As the Head Coach at Nike By Hoboken my focus is the community, the business, and developing my team,” Elvis Martinez, Head Coach at Nike shared. “I help bring passion for sports to the community while creating partnerships that positively impact the consumer.”
The Latest Creations at Nike
Inside the store, shoppers will find all the classic favorites in addition to member-exclusive styles, customizable Nike by You shoes, and Nike’s most recent releases. Team HG was able to tour the space days before the opening and we loved the space, meeting the team, and of course all of the amazing merchandise.
“Our mission is to bring inspiration and innovation to every athlete in the world. If you have a body, you are an athlete,” Tinashe said. “Our latest innovation and products focus on leggings + bras, paired with fitness experiences and services.”
The latest Nike creation is the Nike Go Legging and the Nike Alate Bra, both designed to make you look amazing while you stay active. Thanks to the open waterfront and countless fitness studios + gyms, it’s not hard to do in the Mile Square.
