Baby Gap at 222 Washington Street will be closing soon. Hoboken Girl has learned that Nike will be taking over the clothing brand’s location and not only that, it will be expanding Gap’s location and combining two spaces into one. Public records show that Nike’s still in its beginning stages of taking over. Read on to learn more about what we know about Nike taking over Baby Gap.
Baby Gap Closing
A spokesperson for Gap Inc. has confirmed to Hoboken Girl that Baby Gap will be closing in January 2022 with the exact date TBD. A large window sign seen currently in the window display (see below) reads, “Get It Before It’s Gone. This location is closing. Shop gap.com anytime.”

Baby Gap has been a part of downtown Hoboken since it celebrated its grand opening in June 2013.
Hoboken Girl has learned that Nike has submitted an application through the City of Hoboken to do a whole remodeling of 222 Washington Street. The Historic Preservation Commission confirmed to HG that the application was approved and that Nike will be taking over Gap.
What We Know
At the end of October 2021, Nastasi Architects applied for new signage and building facade for 222 Washington Street. Included in the application, which can be found on the City of Hoboken’s website, is the architect’s proposed work order.
Per the description, Nastasi Architects plans to combine two ground floor commercial tenants into one commercial space, replace/reconfigure the storefront and entry door, build signage, repair/replace lighting, and scrape and repaint the existing condo building’s facade above the commercial space.
The signage document sent to the Historic Preservation Commission includes photos as proof that Nike would be taking over 222 Washington Street. In the latest revised signage document from November 22nd, 2021, Nike’s swoosh symbol is displayed outside the storefront.
Since the application and the signage imagery were submitted end of November, we have learned that it’s been approved.
The building is owned by UNLMTD Real Estate Group. It was built in 1980 and has 35,000 square feet.
Working for Nike
Once Gap closes in January, the architect team will be taking over and beginning renovations. While it’s still in its beginning stages, Nike is looking to hire a team to work at the new Hoboken location. According to hiring websites like Zippia and Jobrapido, the corporate office is looking to hire part-time retail sales associates, a delivery driver, a warehouse material handler, a department manager, and an assistant store manager for Hoboken, NJ.
