New Jersey is facing a federal lawsuit after the Department of Justice sued Governor Mikie Sherrill over her executive order limiting ICE enforcement on state property (The Hoboken Girl). 

Governor Mikie Sherrill has nominated State Police Lt. Colonel Jeanne Hengemuhle as the first woman to lead the New Jersey State Police, marking a historic milestone in the department’s leadership (NJ Governor’s Office).

Smorgasbar won’t be returning to Jersey City for 2026. Instead, the team is debuting a new concept, Six Coasts Bar, on Governors Island this June (The Hoboken Girl).

– After months of speculation, it’s confirmed: Trader Joe’s is coming to Downtown Jersey City at 55 Hudson Street, aiming for a 2027 opening  (The Hoboken Girl).

Jersey City’s Frankie will close in March 2026 after nearly a decade serving Australian-inspired eats and drinks downtown, (The Hoboken Girl).

– When Frankie’s closes in March, the team behind Cheech’s Bagels is set to take over the Grove Street space, with a diner concept on the way (The Hoboken Girl). 

– The building that formerly housed Barcade could be turned into condos. 165 Newar+k Avenue just snagged a $35 million loan to push the major mixed-use project closer to reality (Jersey Digs).

– Things got wild on Tonnelle Avenue — a video shared with HudPost shows an Amazon tractor-trailer driving through Jersey City at night while dragging a traffic light pole behind it (HudPost). 

– Hoboken is getting a new gym called ‘The Athletic Club’ — which will be located at 95 Hudson Street, next to Lenwich, which we reported on earlier this year (Facebook via The Athletic Club).

Hoboken City Council approved Mayor Emily Jabbour’s municipal restructuring plan, creating new departments and confirming her senior leadership team to guide the city forward (City of Hoboken Press Release). 

– An American brasserie called West + Co. is coming to Port Imperial in West New York this spring (The Hoboken Girl). 

– Jersey City’s first female deputy fire chief, Constance Zappella, has filed a lawsuit alleging gender discrimination and unfair treatment during her tenure with the department (Hudson County View). 

– Construction on the Hudson Tunnel Project has resumed with federal funds restored, advancing long-term rail improvements between New Jersey and New York (Gateway Development Commission). 

– However, officials warn that continued delays in federal reimbursements for the Gateway Tunnel project could jeopardize progress on the NY-NJ rail link (NJ.com).

– The emergency room at Jersey City’s Heights University Hospital will close for good on March 14th, after the operator failed to secure sufficient funding (The Hoboken Girl).

– In a major staffing shift, New Jersey City University has laid off at least 151 employees, including 33 professors, as part of cost-cutting measures (Jersey City Times).

– A nearly century-old mixed-use building at 312 Washington Street in Hoboken just sold for $3.47 million, marking the third Washington Street deal in two months (NJ.com).

– Jersey City’s Council will consider a plan to apply for state aid to address the city’s declared fiscal emergency (Jersey City Times).

– Newport celebrated its 40th anniversary, and the developers behind the waterfront development are giving $1 million in grants to 40 local nonprofits (NJ.com). 

Art House Productions is accepting submissions for a large-scale public art installation at Lincoln Park in Jersey City, with 100 contemporary artworks to be displayed as towering flags (Press Release). 

– The Jersey City Council unanimously approved a resolution to apply for more than $100 million in state transitional aid to help address the city’s significant budget deficit (HudsonCountyView).

– West New York residents are complaining about overnight work and the growing presence of a massive snow pile at Port Imperial following recent snow removal operations (The Hoboken Girl).

Federal funding has been frozen for preparation and security efforts for the 2026 FIFA World Cup due to a federal funding impasse related to a government shutdown (NorthJersey).

– A new redevelopment plan is emerging for Jersey City’s Steel Tech site after a previously approved project was canceled, potentially bringing new housing to the site (JerseyDigs).
