Jersey City locals said goodbye to waterfront cocktails on warm summer nights when Smorgasbar closed in 2025. The owners announced that it would not be returning to the space at 3 2nd Street before the start of Summer 2025. A new concept has popped up on our feeds from the same minds that brought Smorgasbar to Jersey City. It’s called Six Coasts Bar, and it will call Governors Island home in the spring of 2026. Sadly, it looks like the owners won’t be making a return across the river to Jersey. Here’s what we know about the new concept, Six Coasts Bar, on Governors Island + a look back at Smorgasbar in Jersey City.
About Six Coasts Bar
Six Coasts Bar is a new concept from the Smorgasburg team. It’s “a destination waterfront bar exploring the coastal flavors of the Americas,” according to the bar’s website. The menu plans to explore the flavors of the Americas, from Nova Scotia to Baja to Bahia, with seafood dishes, tropical cocktails, and fun culture.

The bar will have seating for 100 people in a large outdoor space made for groups and special events. It’s slated to open on Governors Island during Spring 2026.
In an Instagram post launching the bar, the caption reads in part, “To our past guests in Smorgasbar, Jersey City, we hope you’ll join us on Governors Island for this next chapter, where you’ll find the same great views, warm hospitality, and good times you’ve come to love.”

HG reached out to Six Coasts Bar on Instagram, and the bar shared, “We won’t be back in Jersey City this summer, but we’re excited about the new concept and what’s coming next. Hope to welcome your readers at one of our other markets soon.”
About Smorgasbar
Smorgasbar has roots in Jersey City that date back to 2021. The permanent beer garden was located in the former Lutze space, and included a full bar that served up beers on tap, frozen drinks, and local eats, among other things. Locals favored the open-air space, which emphasized unique brews and drinks in the spacious indoor and outdoor areas. Smorgasbar also frequently hosted live music acts and events in the Jersey City space.
The co-founder of Smorgasburg previously shared their disappointment about the closure with The Hoboken Girl.
“We’re obviously disappointed not to be returning to Jersey City — we’ve had a great run there — but this was always a project with a finite timeline given the pop-up nature of the site. Seven-day-a-week operations only really make sense for us with a supportive landlord partner so in the absence of another one of those emerging, we have no immediate plans to open Smorgasbar elsewhere in the area. The liquor license laws in New Jersey also make getting something new off the ground much more complicated and expensive than in New York, so, regrettably, it’s hard to see how anything could come together for this summer,” Jonathan Butler, co-founder of Smorgasburg, told The Hoboken Girl.

In 2021 and 2022, Jersey City also hosted Smorgasburg in the parking lot in Harborside Financial Center of downtown Jersey City, but it did not return for 2023 or 2024.
