Marvel Studios’ New Series, Ms. Marvel, Draws Attention to Jersey City

A trailer for the upcoming Ms. Marvel show has been released…and locals couldn’t help but notice the “Jersey City” shout out! The exciting new series from Marvel Studios follows Kamala Khan, a Pakistani-American teenager from Jersey City, in her journey to becoming Ms. Marvel. Read on for more info on the character from Jersey City.

About the Trailer

After being released on March 15th, the trailer for Ms. Marvel has already surpassed 12 million views on YouTube. The 1:47 minute trailer shows student Kamala Khan, played by Iman Vellani,  struggling between two worlds – the real world and “fantasy land.”

She discovers her superpowers that feel “cosmic.” She says, “I always thought I wanted this kind of life but I never imagined any of this.” She also tells her best friend, Bruno Carrelli, played by Matt Lintz, “It’s not really the brown girls from Jersey City who save the world.”

In the preview, scenes from New York City and Jersey City are shown, including the NYC skyline and Kamala sitting on a street lamp near a Hoboken pier. The convenience store, Circle Q, is also shown. Circle Q is located at 357 West Side Avenue in Jersey City, and no, it’s not a real-life convenience store. Per the comic book, the store is where Bruno works and is often used as her unofficial headquarters.

About Filming

Filming for Ms. Marvel began in early November 2020 and was in production until May 2021. Filming locations include Atlanta, Georgia, parts of New Jersey, and Bangkok, Thailand. At the time, NJ. com reported that the New Jersey Motion Picture and Television Commission told the website that Ms. Marvel was filming “some secondary footage in New Jersey.”

This is Iman’s first acting project. The Pakistani-Canadian actress was born in Markham, Ontario, and landed the role in September 2020. Bisha K. Ali, a writer from Loki, Sex Education and Four Weddings and a Funeral, is the creator of Ms. Marvel.

Marvel Comics released the Ms. Marvel comic book in October 2014. It was the first-ever Marvel comic book with a Muslim character as the superhero. The description reads: “The legend has returned! Marvel Comics presents the all-new MS. MARVEL, the groundbreaking heroine that has become an international sensation! Kamala Khan is just an ordinary girl from Jersey City — until she is suddenly empowered with extraordinary gifts. But who truly is the all-new Ms. Marvel? Teenager? Muslim? Inhuman? Find out as she takes the Marvel Universe by storm, and prepare for an epic tale that will be remembered by generations to come. History in the making is NOW!”

An exclusive first look of Ms. Marvel was initially released in November 2021 as part of a Disney+ event previewing the streaming service’s upcoming programming.

The original series begins streaming on Disney+ on June 8. Following this, the actress Iman Vellani will continue her role as Ms. Marvel in the film The Marvels, a sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel, which is expected to be released on February 17, 2023.
