Our self-care quarantine series with local wellness business owners continues — and Morwen Banq, a single mother and owner of Power-House Pilates, is no stranger to self-care and mental health. As the owner of this boutique Pilates studio in downtown Jersey City, she recently was forced to cancel a trip to her homeland France and has been sheltering in place ever since. To pass the time and shed some light on some self-care for our readers, Morwen is sharing tips on how she is staying sane — despite both a local ordinance closing her business indefinitely and a national ordinance canceling the vacation she desperately needed. Here are her self-care quarantine Qs, answered:

How do you stay healthy and not go stir-crazy during quarantine?

I try and keep my regular routine. I normally get up at 5:30AM for my private clients and to get my son, Max ready for school, so during this quarantine, it is important for me to get up early {maybe not 5:30AM early}. And especially if you have kids, it’s important to find time for yourself. Even a shower can become a chore, so as silly as it sounds, showering and getting dressed every day even if I have nowhere to go keeps me sane! Working out and meditation are equally important. I am also a clean freak, so cleaning and having one organization project a day keeps me grounded.

What product do you admit to stockpiling?

I did stock up on pasta, cans of chickpeas, and ramen {Max, my son’s, favorite}. I didn’t go overboard with the toilet paper though.

Are there any online exercises you recommend?

Online exercises I enjoy are Melissa Wood Health and Jane Do! Otherwise, I just do my regular mat Pilates.

What have you been eating? Recipes?

I’ve been eating fresh food for now, since there may not be any left at the grocery stores soon. This means lots of veggies and salad. My favorite breakfast is avocado toast with a poached egg on top. My son loves fresh juice, so we juice whatever produce we have in the fridge. Today we juiced carrots, celery, beets, and cucumbers.

My avocado toast with a poached egg is the fastest, easiest, and most nourishing recipe:

First, just mix an avocado with lemon juice and red chili flakes. Toast your favorite bread and spread the avocado on top. Bring water and two teaspoons of vinegar { inch from the top of the saucier pan} to a rolling boil.

Then, swirl the water in one direction creating a whirlpool.

Crack your egg into the center of the whirlpool for three minutes. Spoon the egg out onto your avocado toast and enjoy!

What is a self-care tip you can easily do at home with no equipment?

Take some breaks from sitting on the couch or in front of your computer to do some breathing and stretching exercises

How do you destress during the hysteria?

Happy hour! I made sure to stock up on my favorite wines. I must also admit it’s been nice having more free time to FaceTime with friends and their kids and catch up with old friends from France because I generally can’t due to the time difference and scheduling conflicts. I’ve also been catching up on my reading and TV shows.
