Hoboken continues to prove that you don’t have to travel far for good food. Just walk around the Mile Square City and you are bound to find great places to eat from all different cuisines. Take Midtown Philly Steaks, for example. Located at 523 Washington Street, Midtown lets us enjoy Philly {and all of its goodness} without the stop-and-go traffic of the Turnpike.

History

Originally opened in 2001 as a cheesesteak joint, this Hoboken staple has been around for quite some time. In 2013, new owners, Rupesh and Jinesh took over while still maintaining the integrity of the business, whiz and all. “When we took over, we wanted to keep the menu the same. Most of these recipes go back six generations. We did this so our customers know exactly what they were getting,” Jinesh told Hoboken Girl.

The Cheesesteak Debate

Everyone in the area has a different view of what a cheesesteak should include. If you’re from Philly, a typical sandwich has steak, peppers, onions, and cheese whiz. South Jerseyans like theirs with provolone, onions, ketchup + mayo. With so many people transplanting here from all over, a typical cheesesteak can have many different meanings. Rupesh and Jinesh love to spice things up, so the menu has some classic steak sandwiches with others that will throw you for a loop. “Everything is fresh here. Our bread comes from Union City every single day, our meat from Philly, and the veggies are all cut and chopped in-house.” Hungry yet? Just wait til you keep reading.

The Menu

Some fan favorites on the menu include the Chipotle Cheesesteak, the Garlic Mozzarella, and {for the strong willed} the Volcano or the Diablo. The menu was printed way back in 2013 so, there are many “off the menu favorites” that can be whipped up in a jiffy. Both partners plan to revamp the menu this season. “We are hoping to try some things out and see if they work with our crowd”. Jinesh said. {Hint Hint – it may include sauerkraut or Russian Dressing}.

^^Midtown may be known for their cheesesteaks, but their wings are some of the best in town and you NEED to make these part of your next order

“Steven’s students are definitely adventurous and like to try different things,” explained Rupesh. “They aren’t afraid to spice things up.” Students who are on the meal plan at Steven’s can use their Duck Bills {money added to their student card} at Midtown which is a #win for late-night eats. Rupesh and Jinesh are also hoping to partake in Washington Wednesdays, where students can use their meal plan swipes for a meal at participating Hoboken restaurants on Wednesdays.

^^ If you’re on a diet — don’t fret. All of the cheesesteaks at Midtown can be made into a low-carb platter that includes double the meat, and lettuce and tomato. {Editor’s note: these are SO good and you won’t miss the bread too much!}

Hours + Delivery

Open seven days a week, Midtown serves the Hoboken community and surrounding areas on a pretty consistent basis. With late night hours on Thursday {open until 2:00AM} and Friday + Saturday {open until 4:00AM}, you can grab a cheesesteak basically whenever, especially after a long night out {calories don’t count after midnight}. Might we add that they deliver, too? SCORE!

The Verdict

Whether you like whiz or regular cheese, you can’t go wrong at Midtown. With their fresh daily ingredients, friendly faces, and late night hours, binging on a cheat meal is super easy and tasty. There’s nothing better than supporting local businesses, especially when they are cooking up a juicy cheesesteak. Jinesh and Rupesh are always at the restaurant to welcome you in with a smile and some cheese. Truly a hidden gem ON the beaten Washington Street path.
