About the Owner

Mess Method’s founder is Amber Hirsch, an elite fitness instructor and innovator with over 15 years of experience leading boutique fitness studios and serving clients throughout New York City and its surrounding areas. She’s a former professional dancer, Master Barre instructor, and is AFFA {Athletics and Fitness Association of America} and NASM {National Academy of Sports Medicine} certified.

“I’m obsessed with incorporating the way our body is meant to move [through] body sculpting programs and strive to create communities where strong women support each other,” she tells Hoboken Girl. “After spending 10 years building a leading fitness brand, I had the opportunity to step away and consider the impact I wanted to make through my work. Several of my committed clients reached out and encouraged me to open a studio of my own.”

Timeline of the Opening

Mess began making a name for itself in August 2019 when it began hosting pop-up classes in Hoboken and Jersey City with the support of local businesses, such as Celebrate Life, Monroe Street Movement Space, and Sattva Yoga JC. From there, its success and popularity led the founder to find a permanent home.

Hirsch came across the “perfect space to convert into a modern, light-filled boutique studio” in January 2020. Around this time, she also entered into a new business partnership with a long-time client and friend, Ellen Effron.

They had the initial grand opening date set for March 14, 2020 – until the pandemic forced businesses to shut down. A few days later, Hirsch, a local soccer mom and dog mom who is married to a pastry chef, launched Mess Method’s virtual classes.

“Working through the uncertainty, we launched with a greater reach than ever imaginable,” she tells us. “By June 2020, we began offering seasonal outdoor workouts to those in the Hoboken community and virtual experiences to individuals across the country.”

What to Expect

The goal of Mess Method is to bring “smaller-sized, high-quality group fitness classes,” according to Amber. Per the website, Mess Method is described as: “Barre-inspired with a little bit of sweat. Full-body conditioning with a whole lot of soul. Our classes are well-rounded and designed to hit all the spots. Show up as you are and surprise yourself with how strong you can become.”

The Mess signature class is “a total body sculpt and conditioning class which is balanced and challenging yet completely customizable.” The Mess barre class “explores the endless possibilities of utilizing the ballet barre to go deeper into positions, challenge the core, gain balance and increase flexibility.” The “hot mess” class is an “endorphin-infused class” that is cardio and core-based. In addition, clients can take the Mess pure sculpt class, which is the “low-impact, sculpt-focused version” of the signature class.

Lastly, Mess outdoors — total body sculpt and conditioning class — offers clients the opportunity to workout outside with the New York City skyline as the backdrop. All outdoor classes are taught at Maxwell Place on the 12th Street Pier.

Hirsch tells Hoboken Girl Mess Method “uniquely incorporates elements of Pilates, barre, functional training, cardio, and dance. Mess teachers design the structure and sequence of each class to give your body what it craves. Between the music and high energy of the room, Mess is something you’ll enjoy all the way through and will help you push past what you thought was impossible. This is our goal for you: no matter where you’re starting from or what your story is, we’re here to help you move forward.”

What’s to Come

Following Mess Method’s grand opening on May 1st, the studio will continue to offer outdoor classes and virtual classes — with more than 24 classes per week {and growing!}. Mess also has an on-demand library that gives clients 24/7 access to over 100-plus workouts with new classes added every week.

“All the hard work and the wait was worth it. We are so incredibly grateful for the support this community has shown us and are beyond excited to open our studio and have another platform to move, evolve, shake and sculpt,” Hirsch adds. “Come on in, Hoboken!”
