Komal Majmundar didn’t always plan to own a yoga studio. In fact, she was going to be a neuroscientist. In college, however, she struggled with anxiety and stress — and was looking for ways to deal with it. A friend of hers suggested yoga, and lo and behold — her life changed forever. Read on to learn more about Komal and her journey to founding Roots Yoga Studio in Jersey City, located at 2983 John F. Kennedy Boulevard.

About Komal

“I know traditional methods are there for people, but I was looking for something to do on my own time at home,” she says. Yoga was her answer, and she found that the deep breathing exercises and the strengthening poses allowed her to connect to her mind and quiet her thoughts.

From there, she joined a studio in Manhattan, where she studied her practice. Upon completion of her certification, she taught in New York City for six months before deciding to take her practice home.

She was living in Jersey City at the time and was born and raised in the Garden State. She wanted her own studio, she says, and she wanted to stay at home.

So, about five years ago, Majmundar founded Roots Yoga right in the heart of Journal Square. She has space for about 15-20 students per class but only six during Covid times. She has a plant wall and a space to sit and prepare, as well as extra yoga mats. But it’s the natural light that drew her to her studio.

“It was the windows that drew me in, honestly,” Majmundar says. “I got such a good vibe from this space.” Underneath the big, east-facing windows, she sets up her yoga mat and teaches a Vinyasa-Hatha blend of yoga, 16 classes a week during Covid times.

The Studio

Roots Yoga is within walking distance from the Journal Square PATH station and now offers virtual classes for those who can’t make it to the studio.

Drop-in sessions are $18 each, and a $1 monthly pass allows for four classes a week in the studio, and unlimited Zoom classes. There’s also an option for an $80 pass for all Zoom classes.

Class offerings include yoga for all levels and level two yoga, and classes take place at all times of the day. Private classes are also available.

Beginning this month, too, Roots Yoga will introduce two new classes yoga for stress relief, as people carry the weight of working from home and the pandemic into their practice, and yoga for weight loss, as a more sedentary lifestyle {often by force} has seen weight gain in many people who are adjusting to the new normal.

The most important thing for Majmundar, she says, is listening to her clients. With monthly packages, she has members fill out a questionnaire that allows her to learn about their injuries, goals, and yoga experience, which allows her to tailor classes and teaching to individual needs. She also offers health and lifestyle tips that people can combine with their yoga practice to live a healthy, mindful life.
