This year, Jersey City added another title to its multi-hyphenate resume: the site of a USA Track and Field-sanctioned marathon and half marathon event. The first-ever Jersey City Marathon race took place April 23rd — and now, after its “major success,” the event is returning for the foreseeable future, landing on the second Sunday of April each year (the third Sunday if there are conflicts with Easter). Registration for the 2024 race, which falls on Sunday, April 14th, is open now. Read on for what we know about the 2024 Jersey City Marathon + Half Marathon Event and find out how to register.

The Race’s Return

On April 23, 2023, Jersey City debuted its first-ever marathon + half marathon event, which, per NJ.com, “drew nearly 5,000 runners” competing for a $50,000 prize. The race, which was run entirely in Jersey City, was also a qualifier for the Olympics and the following Boston Marathon.

Now, after “major success” this spring, the Jersey City Marathon is returning for 2024, and the indefinite future thereafter. According to NJ.com, race director Steve Lipsky shared that the 2024 race will be “substantially the same” as 2023 — with the half + full marathon happening on the same day (Sunday, April 14th) and kicking off at 7AM from the same location as last year (Washington Boulevard). As of now, the courses for both races haven’t been finalized.

The Jersey City marathon is a collaboration between Jersey City Road Runners — a Jersey City running group/community — and CompuScore, according to the website.

“The marathon and half marathon will be a USA Track + Field New Jersey sanctioned event on a certified course, one of the fastest and flattest in all of America,” the website reads. It also promises wonderful views and exposure to the rich culture Jersey City has to offer — a culture that inspired the whole idea of the marathon in the first place.

Registration

On Tuesday, August 1st, the official Jersey City Marathon Instagram shared that registration for the event is now open via CompuScore. The post additionally encouraged residents, “don’t be left out in the cold,” warning that last year’s race eventually sold out.

Interested runners can register for the Jersey City Marathon or Half Marathon here. The price for the half marathon race fee is $100 plus a $6.75 sign-up fee, which will increase to $105 after Tuesday, August 15th. As for the marathon, the race fee is $120 plus a $7.95 sign-up fee. This will increase to $130 after Tuesday, August 15th.
